The New York Mets continue to scour the free agent market for veteran pitchers who will accept minor league contracts while looking to rebuild their value.  A Chris Young reunion is always an option and guys like Shaun Marcum and Joe Saunders also remain on the teams radar. #bbpBox_291922452517376002 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_291922452517376002 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } On Joe Saunders, I’m hearing at least 4 teams still interested – Balt, NYM, SD, and Minnesota. about 1 hour ago via Twitter for iPhoneReplyRetweetFavorite @Jim_Duquette Jim Duquette Marcum and Saunders seem in line for major league deals and if New York is not willing to extend such offers then they’ll have to look elsewhere.  With that being said, some new names have popped up in recent days. A couple of days ago Jerry Crasnick of ESPN tweeted that the Mets were among several teams keeping tabs on 33-year-old Brandon Webb. #bbpBox_291224709402603520 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_291224709402603520 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } Several NL East clubs are keeping tabs on Brandon Webb. #Phillies #Marlins #Nationals #Mets January 15, 2013 11:45 am via webReplyRetweetFavorite @jcrasnick Jerry Crasnick The Colorado Rockies and Minnesota Twins were also reported to have interest in Webb, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since Opening Day of the 2009 season due to recurring shoulder issues. Yesterday, Sports Hochi reported that Daisuke Matsuzaka was deciding on minor league offers from the Indians, Marlins and Mets. #bbpBox_291746871280562177 a { text-decoration:none; color:#5200F7; }#bbpBox_291746871280562177 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } 松坂、移籍先絞った!インディアンス、マーリンズ、メッツの3球団!:MLB:スポーツ報知 http://t.co/JCriMufX Daisuke Matsuzaka down to Indians, Marlins, Mets about 12 hours ago via Tweet ButtonReplyRetweetFavorite @gwynar Gen Sueyoshi Adam Rubin of ESPN hears otherwise: #bbpBox_291904054752333825 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_291904054752333825 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } Before we go crazy on Matsuzaka, just got text from #Mets insider who said he does not believe organization has talked to him “at all.” about 2 hours ago via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @AdamRubinESPN Adam Rubin Photo by Michael G. Baron My guess is that the Mets would like to bring in a couple of guys on minor league deals rather than commit to a major league contract, unless there’s an affordable deal they simply can’t pass up.  With pitching at a scarcity it’s hard to imagine anything will come cheap these days but Citi Field and New York city can be an inviting package to a pitcher who  wants to up their stock on a big stage. Because Kyle Lohse is going to require at least a 2-year deal, draft pick compensation, and a whole lot of money, he is essentially not an option for New York.  That’s a frustrating reality for me to face because he’s low-risk / high-reward alternative to the bargain bin pitchers the Mets have been constantly linked to these past few offseasons.  You have to pay for quality, hopefully New York will be in position to do that soon enough.
