If you’re a free agent or player on the trade block and you’re not on the ‘bargain shopping’ New York Mets list of possibilities, you may be in for a long Winter.  Such is likely the case for former Yankee catcher Jorge Posada and current San Diego Padres second basemen Orlando Hudson.

Seeing a potential need at his position and presumably an opportunity to not have to uproot from New York, the 40-year-old Posada reportedly reached out to the Mets, only to be told the team was not interested.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York confirmed that while the Mets will look to move on from Ronny Paulino, they won’t turn to hip hip…Jorge!

With dissatisfaction over Ronny Paulino’s adherence to game plans as well as lethargy, the Mets are likely to non-tender Paulino on Dec. 12 and go another direction for a righty-hitting catcher to complement Josh Thole.

It’s certainly possible Mike Nickeas, already in-house, gets the shot. But it will not be Jorge Posada. “

While I have no interest in EVER seeing Posada behind the plate in a Mets uniform, I’m glad this story came about because let’s face it, any reason is a good reason to pull up an old ESPN commercial.  As good as it might feel to dismiss a former Yankee, if all the fuss over Paulino is true, then the team will need to bring in a veteran backup to pair with Josh Thole.  According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Jason Varitek may fit the bill.

Varitek could bring an anti-Paulino like veteran presence and can certainly handle a young pitching staff, which will be a plus if the Mets decide to be aggressive with some of their prospects towards the end of next season.  The 39-year-old catcher hit 11 homers in only 222 at-bats with Boston last year but hit just .221 on the year.

As for Orlando Hudson, a player who the Mets seemed to be linked to year in and year out, the second basemen is reportedly very available, but not of interest to New York.

I can’t see the Mets doing anything at second base until they know what the situation will be at shortstop.  If Reyes returns there’s a logjam at second with Murphy, Turner, and Tejada.  Even if Reyes signs elsewhere, expectations are that Murphy will slide over to second with Tejada manning short.  Toss in the fact that some of the team’s better prospects, such as Reese Havens, may get have a shot at making the club out of Spring and bringing in a pricey veteran who is owed $5.5 million in 2012 just doesn’t make sense.

Quotes: Sandy on if Reyes will give Mets final offer

“We’re very interested in retaining Jose Reyes,” Sandy Alderson said tonight on a conference call with team bloggers. “We’re sincere in our desire to have him back.” Earlier today, WFAN’s Rich Coutinho said Alderson and Jose’s representatives have a ‘gentleman’s agreement,’ which states that, once Jose receives all...

Dave Kingman, 1976 and what might have been

I like Dave Kingman. Now, I realize perfectly well that makes me an idiot in the minds of some. After all, Kingman could seemingly do nothing besides hit home runs on the field and generally the less said about his off the field exploits, the better. But man, was he fun to watch! The thrill of seeing a home run hitter – check that a HOME RUN HITTER – on the Mets was...

And Nick Evans

The Pirates signed Nick Evans to a minor league deal last night, according to the New York Daily News. Evans has played bits and pieces of the last four seasons with the Mets as a utility first baseman/corner outfielder with very little power. That doesn't sound terribly exciting, but Evans does have a respectable .295/.360/.489 line against lefties, with six of his eight career...

Alderson expects to talk to Reyes’ agents in coming days

If the Mets have serious competition for Jose Reyes other than the Marlins, it’s news to Sandy Alderson. The Mets general manager yesterday said he’s unaware of any outside offers for the All-Star shortstop other than Miami’s reported bid in the $75-$90 million range over six...

Live Post at 6:30 pm of Sandy’s Blogger Conference Call

Tonight at 6:30 pm, Sandy Alderson will talk with a group of Mets bloggers by phone, as he gets ready for next week’s Winter Meetings in Dallas. Teams backed off Jose Reyes after Marlins 6/90 offer

One rival GM told Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com that other clubs backed off pursuing Jose Reyes once the Marlins offered him $90 million for six years. “As of now, no other club appears as interested, but teams often mask their intentions in free agency,” Rosenthal points out. Here are other key updates about Jose over the last few days: The Marlins may bump up their...

Now Pitching for the Mets...Brad Lidge?

If the rumors on the internet are to believed - and, as a rule, I believe everything on the internet - then the New York Mets are making a run at former Phillies closer Brad Lidge, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. This news is not surprising, given the fact that Lidge would not be returning to the Phillies, and that, invariably, he would pitch for someone else. When you...
