Is Valdespin Out Of The Mets’ Team Picture?

JetsMets13 asks… What has happened to Jordany Valdespin’s stock in the organization? I keep hearing about Duda, Nieuwenhuis and Baxter with hardly ever a mention of ‘Spin. I thought he flashed some nice power in limited playing time, and when they handed him an outfielder’s glove he adapted very quickly. What gives? Joe D. replies… No one can deny that Valdespin is probably...

Zack Wheeler Carries A Certain Mystique

Anthony DiComo’s latest mailbag column on Mets.com is a particularly good one this week as he tackles many good questions including this one: I know that Zack Wheeler is untouchable for the most part. But if you were the Mets, wouldn’t you have to entertain the idea of trading Wheeler and a couple of other prospects for Giancarlo Stanton? If I were the Mets, I would certainly...

Is It Time For Mets To Lock Up Ike Davis?

Taskmaster asks: We know Niese was signed long term in ST last season and the idea of locking up the young guys is a model that is being followed. I am not sure the Mets are 100% sold on Ike yet but they are certainly leaning that way. My question is when do we see Ike given a LT contract that locks him up for 5-7 years? Jessep replies: For me, I think Ike has a lot to prove in 2013...

Mets Card of the Week: 2012 Lucas Duda

2012 TOPPS CHROME CYAN PRINTING PLATE LUCAS DUDA The concept of serial numbering cards gained mainstream hobby acceptance in the early ’90s, thanks in large part to the Donruss Elite inserts discussed here. As the decade progressed in a haze of flannel and Seinfeld, the legion of extant card companies kept lowering the limbo stick. 5,000. 3,000. 2,500. 1,000. How low can you...

MMO Top 25 Prospects: #20 (Robles) Through #16 (Leathersich)

It is my turn to roll out some profiles on who we feel are the top prospects in the Mets minor league system right now. As Sean mentioned in the first post of the series, which you can read here, the list was compiled after much deliberation, arguing, and name-calling. To be honest, a lot of that had to do with my new name being Perseus and Sean requesting to be addressed as Batman…but...

Mets Balked At $8 Million, Two Years For Hairston

Updated on Jan. 15 by Joe D. Some interesting tidbits from Jon Heyman tonight regarding our boy Scott Hairston… Heyman tweeted that the Mets balked when Hairston asked them for $8 million over two years. That must have turned Sandy ten different shades of purple. It’s a significant raise for Hairston who has never made more than $2.45 million in his career, but not totally unreasonable eithe...

The Mets and home run hitters

Throughout their history, the Mets have been a franchise known for pitching. The annals of Mets pitching are sprinkled with ERA crowns, strikeout crowns, Cy Young winners, and excellent individual performances. After 8,019 games, they even have a no hitter. But for all of the Mets historical pitching success, there is a noted lack of offensive dominance. Specifically, and although...

Harvey Reporting To Camp Early, Says Wheeler And Him Want To Be The Best

Matt Harvey spoke with Peter Botte of the Daily News and told him that he believes the Mets have the pitching to play into October this season even with the loss of R.A. Dickey. “I feel like we absolutely can do something this year,” Harvey said. “That’s why we all play the game. R.A. will be difficult to replace, obviously. But as players, we’re not looking at this as...

Mets Minors: JC Gamboa among offseason league winners

Juan Carlos Gamboa – .270/.390/.444/.834 (28 Games) 11 Runs, 5 RBI, 3 2Bs and 1 HR: J.C. Gamboa will be 22 in 2013 and he hasn’t played above the SSA (though he’s played in the AAA Mexican League a few times.  He’s a smaller player who has good defense at 2B but he lacks the speed or power to be an impact in the big-leagues.  It’s a good bet that he’ll progress through...

Murphy, Davis, Parnell Officially File For Arbitration

The MLB Players Association officially announced that Ike Davis, Daniel Murphy and Bobby Parnell of the Mets have filed for arbitration. Barring any settlement, the two sides will exchange salary figures on Friday and have hearings beginning next month in Florida. According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the last time a player and the Mets went to arbitration was in 2008 when...

MMO Flashback: Changing the Dynamic, One Catcher at a Time

With the recent acquisition of Travis d’Arnaud, the Mets added one of the top two catching prospects in the minors, the other being Mike Zunino. Could d’Arnaud be the next great Mets catcher to lead the team to a World Series as Jerry Grote, Gary Carter and Mike Piazza once did? It’s a good question and one that will be answered in the years to come. Catching is the subject...

The R.A. Dickey Trade: Why I’m Still Sad He Is Gone

Hello my Mets faithful!  Right about now it’s the middle of winter and we’re knee deep in NFL playoff football, NBA basketball, and the NHL FINALLY returns next weekend!  Of course, many of us are also counting down the days until spring training begins. That wonderful time of year when we all have renewed faith in our teams, eager to see what new talent is up and coming, and...

Goodbye Stache, Hello Beard?

With the Mets continuing to take a slow and measured approach towards free agency this winter, some interesting new broke on Sunday about a possible addition to the bullpen. It was reported first by USA Today that former San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson worked out in California for Mets G.M. Sandy Alderson on Saturday. The hopes for Wilson was that he could prove that he...
