Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:
Ailing right-hander John Maine might be shut down for the season if Jerry Manuel and the Mets don't like what they see from Maine's shoulder in a throwing session this week, Manuel told reporters today.
Maine, who has a bone spur in his shoulder, is coming off his worst start in almost a year Saturday night, when he gave up eight earned runs in 7 2/3 innings of an 8-3 home loss to the Astros.
Maine told The Post after the game that he planned to have the bone spur removed by way of arthroscopic surgery after the season. Manuel, though, said this afternoon that the surgical timetable for Maine could be speeded up if the Mets aren't happy with Maine's throwing session.
Maine is scheduled to start next weekend in Florida against the Marlins, but Manuel said Maine would be put down for the year ?- not just three or four starts -- should the session not go well.
The Mets' options to replace Maine in the rotation would be limited until the call-up period starts Sept. 1. They are highly unlikely to land a starter through the waivers process, so Brian Stokes would appear to be the choice before Brandon Knight, Jon Niese or Robert Parnell could be brought up next month.
