Jeremy Hefner who turned heads with performances in June that established him as a key part of the starting rotation — if only for a time — will likely undergo Tommy John surgery because of a partially torn medial collateral ligament. The team said Hefner is mulling whether to seek a second opinion after the club’s orthopedic surgeon David Altchek recommended the procedure. It would keep Hefner out for most or perhaps all of next season. Meantime right-hander Jenrry Mejia put on the disabled list after leaving Saturday’s game in San Diego will have surgery to remove bone spurs in his pitching elbow the club announced. For weeks the plan had been for Mejia to deal with the problem in the offseason but surgery is now planned in the next seven to 10 days. A third wounded pitcher closer Bobby Parnell out with a herniated disc in his neck said he received a positive report from the doctor yesterday but said it was doubtful he would be allowed to pitch again this season and risk a more serious injury. "I’m pushing as hard as I can" he said "but they have the reins." •€… David Wright said before last night’s game that there is no timetable for his return from a right hamstring injury. The Mets captain hurt the leg nearly three weeks ago. He said he felt no twinges in the leg but that he was carefully following directions from the Mets medical staff. "It’s kind of frustrating" he said before adding that the idea was to "gradually take baby steps." He hopes he said to return to the lineup before the end of the season to give him confidence going into next spring training.
