Mets Pitching Rotation Update

By SBRForum.com

The New York Mets continue to surprise many this season, hanging right in the NL East race and making good on some of our free MLB picks choices. Much of that has been thanks to the starting rotation. Here’s a quick look at how the Mets pitching is set up for this weekend.

New York got a quality start from Chris Young in winning the first game of a four-game series vs. the Dodgers in LA Thursday night 3-2. So after missing almost all of last season and the start of this season after shoulder surgery Young has yet to allow more than three runs in any of his five starts this year.

Friday the Mets will send RA Dickey to the hill against Aaron Harang for the Dodgers. New York will then go with Johan Santana Saturday against Nathan Eovaldi. And Sunday the Mets will throw Dillon Gee against Clayton Kershaw.

Dickey has been a wonder so far this season for New York, throwing consecutive one-hitters, going  40-plus innings without allowing an earned run, and making a case for starting the All-Star game for the National League. But it will be interesting to see how he performs coming off a rough outing vs. the Yankees last Sunday in which he gave up five runs in six innings.

Santana has eight quality starts this year, including that no-hitter vs. St. Louis, and has given up more than three runs just three times. So for the most part he’s keeping the Mets in games. Santana has allowed just 71 hits in 90 innings, and has 90 whiffs.

Finally, Gee has five quality starts out of his last seven outings, but he’s been pitching in a bit of bad luck. Just in the last month or so Gee allowed two runs vs. Philly but the Mets lost 10-6; he gave up two runs vs. St. Louis but the Mets lost 5-4; he allowed three runs in seven innings vs. the Yankees but the Mets lost that one 4-2; and he gave up three earned runs in six innings vs. Cincinnati but New York got beat 7-3. He also had a couple similar outings earlier this year. So while his numbers might not show it Gee is giving the Mets a chance to win on a regular basis.
