The New York Mets placed outfielder Jason Bay on the 7-day disabled list after he sustained a concussion during Friday's 7-3 home loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Bay injured himself in the second inning by diving into the left field wall trying to make a catch, hitting his head against it.

Bay also missed the last two months of the 2010 season with a concussion.

Scott Hairston replaced Bay in the outfield on Friday and will see increased playing time in Bay's absence.

"It's really hard to watch, especially him just coming back from injury," Hairston told MLB.com. "He's a well-liked guy. We like having him around. It's very difficult to watch a player like that go through something like that."

Mets pitcher Jon Rauch tweeted that he was disappointed in the New York fans for booing him as he walked off the field, especially since it is a much more serious injury than perhaps some realize.

Bay has struggled this season, hitting .187 with four home runs and six RBI in 75 at-bats. He recently missed 21 games with a broken rib.
