BEST OF MAXIM
Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, does a fine job of explaining why the Mets chose not to insure Johan Santana’s contract.
The Mets will be on the hook for the remaining $31 million owed to Johan Santana because they did not insure the contract. Why?
As premiums have skyrocketed because of escalating salaries and past payouts — such as the bailout when Mo Vaughn was owed $17 million...
DARIN GORSKI: Is he officially a reliever now?
Adam Rubin of ESPN New York took to Twitter a short while ago and began posting his projections for the Mets Triple-A roster.
Included in his Las Vegas 51′s rotation he has: Zack Wheeler, Aaron Laffey, Collin McHugh, Chris Schwinden and Carlos Torres.
A month ago I projected the rotation as follows:
I had the chance to talk to New York Mets left-handed pitching prospect Jack Leathersich last month before he headed to Port St. Lucie for the start of Spring Training.
Now that the season has begun, and all of our regular readers are returning from their offseason slumber, I’m going to re-post many of our interviews that you may have missed.
I can’t think of a better Mets...
Adam Rubin of ESPN New York writes:
In desperate need of clearing several spots, the Mets have put out word to other teams that they are interested in moving non-core prospects on the 40-man roster.
Among those available via trade: Gonzalez Germen, Darin Gorski, Reese Havens, Juan Lagares, Cesar Puello, Elvin Ramirez and Hansel Robles.
That is based on the assumption that Omar...
New York Mets right-hander Shaun Marcum could miss the start of the regular season because of a neck injury.
Marcum, who signed a $4 million, one-year contract during the offseason, experienced discomfort during a bullpen session Monday. He was being examined in Port St. Lucie on Tuesday and was all but certain to miss his final exhibition start, slated for Thursday.
Sandy Alderson has announced in a 6:45 pm conference call currently on SNY that Johan Santana has a probable re-tear of his anterior capsule in his left shoulder.
Surgery is likely, which would spell the end for his 2013 season and potentially be career threatening.
“A second surgery is a strong possibility,” Alderson said. “He may be lost to the Mets for the season.”
MAYS: ENDURING IMAGE OF A FORGOTTEN TEAM
The Mets have made four World Series appearances, with each of those seasons and Octobers giving us cherished memories.
But, only one – the nearly forgotten 1973 team, with the still memorable rallying cry of “Ya Gotta Believe,’’ – identifies with the tumultuous ride this franchise has been on since its birth as the replacement child...
Daniel Murphy passed the audition and said it was worth the risk.
Murphy, playing for the first time in a major league game this spring because of a strained right intercostal muscle, singled in three at-bats against Washington’s Gio Gonzalez, played five innings and declared himself ready for Opening Day.
MURPHY: Five innings at second; one hit.
Had he kept playing minor league...
In the course of the many years I have been a Mets devotee, I have witnessed countless contests between the Amazin’s and their various opponents where the end result was either a victory or loss for the Flushing crew, but nothing much beyond that unless something truly remarkable occurred to mark the game in my memory. Those games, where something truly out of the ordinary happened...
The Mets have started stockpiling prospects; it’s starting to look like a real Sandy Alderson team. Between trading veterans and a few strong drafts, the Mets have started to build an impressive system.
Note: Avg ranking takes the average of any site I could find that had team rankings (sum of ranks divided by total sites). Comp ranking is the composite for the organization; it...
Baseball America’s Jim Callis had hinted in a chat a couple of months ago that the Mets farm system would be ranked somewhere around 16-18 which many found too low.
Well today, Baseball America released their 2013 Organizational Rankings and the Mets fared better than initially expected with a No. 14 ranking, putting them in the top half of MLB.
Here’s the top 14 overall:

An MRI on Johan Santana’s surgically repaired left shoulder capsule showed a re-tear, general manager Sandy Alderson announced on a conference call with reporters Thursday. More will be written about this in a bit.
