This year Baseball Prospectus ranked the Mets farm system 18th out of all of the 30 MLB clubs, despite the fact that they traded away four of their top prospects the previous year.
Many of these prospects won’t see major league time for years to come, however there are a select few that could make it to the majors within the next year or two.
Nick Evans, 1B -
Nick Evans was called up in the middle of last season to replace the injured Marlon Anderson.
After getting off to a relatively quick start Evans cooled off and was eventually sent back down to the minor leagues.
He later returned to the team in September where he would finish the season with a .257 batting average in 109 at bats.It looked as if maybe Evans wasn’t major league material. However, that impression changed this spring, in which Evans had a breakout spring.
This spring Evans hit 3 home runs and finished fourth in the team’s ranking for RBIs with 12. Although Evans will begin the year at the Triple A level look for him to earn a spot on the roster once the injury bug bites the Mets (and we all know it will).
If Evans can work on his swing and improve his batting average than the sky is the limit. With Mike Carp traded to the Mariners and Carlos Delgado likely not to re-sign at the end of this year, it would appear that the first base job appears to be Evans’s after this year.
