The New York Mets overcame a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the 9th inning against the Miami Marlins and completed their series sweep with a 3-2 victory.  Jonathon Niese turned in another quality outing by going 7 strong innings and allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6.  Ramon Ramirez, who had struggled early on with New York, came on and tossed two scoreless innings of relief to set the stage for the Mets comeback in the home half of the 9th.

Today marked Ramirez’s third straight scoreless relief outing for his new club and the 30-year-old righty would end up picking up his second win of the season thanks to a wild Heath Bell, a gritty at-bat by Justin Turner, and some timely hitting by rookie outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis.  Turner pinch hit for Ramirez in the 9th with the bases loaded and one out.  After falling behind in the count 0-2, @Redturn2 strung together a tremendous 13-pitch at bat that resulted in a game tying walk.

Scott Hairston grounded out to first, running New York’s hitless streak with the bases loaded to a whopping 16 at bats.  That streak, along with the game, would end thanks to Kirk Nieuwenhuis.  The 24-year-old rookie hit a shot to right that went over the head of Michael Stanton and plated Josh Thole with the games winning run.  With three more hits this afternoon Captain Kirk has raised his average to .333 on the season and regardless of when Andres Torres and Jason Bay come back, I just don’t see this kid getting sent back down to Triple-A Buffalo.
