Much like in the series opener, the New York Mets found themselves down early on against the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday night.  This time it was 2-run homer by Hunter Pence in the first inning off Miguel Batista that put New York behind early, but even after falling down 4-0, the Mets would not be denied.

With the team down three and one man on with two outs in the 7th inning, the offense strung together three consecutive singles (Torres, Nieuwenhuis, and Wright) to tie teh game before Lucas Duda welcomed Antonio Bastardo into the game with the team’s fourth straight hit, giving the Mets a 5-4 lead.  Nieuwenhuis and Duda added another RBI apiece in the 9th inning and with Frank Francisco getting the day off after closing out the team’s last three wins, Jon Rauch was called upon to close the door.

Like the rest of the bullpen, Big Jon would not let the team down, finishing off the Phils and setting the Mets up with a chance for a sweep tomorrow.

For the second time in 2012, the Mets have come to Citizens Bank Park and punched the Phillies in the mouth. They go for the sweep tomorrow. 46 minutes ago via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @McCulloughSL Andy McCullough

These last two games have just been fun to watch as the offense has laid in the wings and capitalized on opportunities while the bullpen has kept the Phillies from doing the same.  Acosta, Ramirez, Byrdak, and Rauch all stepped up tonight as the Mets overcame their largest deficit (4 runs) of the season.  The Phillies just don’t look very good, I really don’t see anyone to fear in their line-up.  Pence is good but he’s not Utley or Howard and when those guys return from injury, they won’t be the old Utley and Howard, just ‘older versions’.   After taking the first two games of the series from Philadelphia in dramatic fashion, Jon Rauch summed things up best!

Gotta love the character on this team!!! Guys battle till the end!! #MetsWin!! 30 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhoneReplyRetweetFavorite @jrauch60 Jon Rauch
