Mets Rumors: The Mets watched free agent reliever Brian Wilson this weekend, and weren’t impressed, Mike Puma of the NY Post reports. The Mets don’t consider the rehabbing right-hander to be worthy of a big league deal at this point. Wilson, who’s recovering from Tommy John surgery, wasn’t interested in a minor league contract, according to Puma. The Mets could watch him pitch later on, but right now he’s not physically ready in the view of Mets personnel. “He’s got a ways to go,” one person said. The Mets were known to have interest in Wilson. It’s believed that the Mets countered Scott Hairston’s asking price of two years and $8MM with a one-year, $2MM offer, Puma reports. One source suggested to the Post that the Mets will find a way of adding an outfielder even if they don’t re-sign the free agent Hairston. NL East teams such as the Phillies, Marlins, Nationals and Mets are keeping tabs on free agent right-hander Brandon Webb, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports (on Twitter...

Some interesting tidbits from Jon Heyman tonight regarding our boy Scott Hairston… Heyman tweeted that the Mets balked when Hairston asked them for $8 million over two years. That must have turned Sandy ten different shades of purple. It’s a significant raise for Hairston who has never made more than $2.45 million in his career, but not totally unreasonable eithe...

Scott Hairston Expected To Make Decision This Week

Updated on Jan. 15 According to sportscaster Jim Bowden of ESPN XM, free agent outfielder Scott Hairston is expected to make a decision this week. This is becoming one of the most prolonged announcements of the offseason as we heard the same news about two weeks ago, but whatever. If Hairston does re-sign with the Mets, their outfield which was going to be significantly upgraded...

MMO Fair or Foul: The Hair Of The Dog That Bit The Mets

I totally loved digging into the first half of this reaction post by Bill Price of the Daily News, after learning that the Mets balked at Scott Hairston’s two year contract demand. Just who the heck does Scott Hairston think he is? According to reports, he has the nerve of asking the Mets for a 2-year, $8 million contract? If my math is right, that’s $4 million a year. Who...

Is Justin Upton worth acquiring for the Mets?

He’s No. 10 on the Arizona Diamondbacks, but No. 1 on wish lists throughout baseball. Justin Upton continues to be available, according to industry rumors. As Arizona approaches Spring Training with a glut of outfielders, there’s been no shortage of teams inquiring about the potentially budding star, including the Mets. But as high as the demand may be, the price is equally...

Braves Rumors: Atlanta ‘Best Fit’ for Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton?

It appears more and more likely that the Arizona Diamondbacks will part ways with outfielder Justin Upton prior to the start of the 2013 MLB season, and Buster Olney of ESPN believes the Atlanta Braves could be the “best fit” for the young slugger. Olney notes that depending on what the Texas Rangers decide to do, the Braves may well be the best fit for Upton. Texas...

Heyman: Mets and D-Backs not matching up in Upton talks

After Arizona Diamondbacks’ outfielder Justin Upton nixed a deal that would have sent him to the Seattle Mariners, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported that D-Backs GM Kevin Towers had no intentions of lowering his asking price for the 25-year-old: “I’m not taking less,” Towers said here in a brief interview at the Scouts Foundation dinner. “I’m in no hurry.” Upton has...

D’Backs Want Wheeler, Mets Don’t Match Up In Upton Deal

Updated by Joe D. on 1/15 at 1:30 PM According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks are not a good match for a Justin Upton deal. D’Backs GM Kevin Towers is insisting that he will not lower his trade request for Upton since the deal with the Seattle Mariners evaporated last week. ”I’m not taking less,” Towers said at the Scouts Foundation...

Short Shots: Mets Wiggling Back In, Best Bullpen: Braves Or Nationals?

The more I keep saying that there’s no chance in hell that the Mets will trade for Justin Upton or Giancarlo Stanton, the more I keep reading stuff like this: However, if you’re a Mets fan who wants Upton (or Jason Kubel) now, root for Michael Bourn to a take a one-year deal with the Braves, and root for teams like the Rangers and others to hold off for Stanton. In that scenario...

Throwing it Around

The snow has melted at least for now, and I’ve had MLB Network on just about every night. With just four NFL teams left in play to determine who will win the Super Bowl, baseball season looms just ten short weeks away. Okay, who are we kidding? February will be a bear even with the NHL back in action. The only cure for a baseball fix is baseball. Here are some daily links that...
