It looks like the Mets’ roster is rounding into shape. The only thing missing, it seems, is a lefty-hitting, flexible outfielder who can be brought in on the cheap. Enter Rick Ankiel. So, what exactly are the Mets waiting for? For a team in search of some spunk and grit, Ankiel could provide the Mets just what they need. Ankiel is an above-average defensive center fielder with a rocket-cannon of an arm. While he has his offensive flaws, Ankiel has the intangibles to be a productive member of a team in need of some grit. For his career, Ankiel is .246 hitter with 64 home runs and 218 RBI’s in 540 games, while also boasting a .309 OBP and .423 slugging percentage. Sure, those are not eye-opening numbers, but for a team that is looking to sign a relatively cheap free agent, Ankiel’s skill-set matches what the Mets are looking for. Ankiel is athletic enough to play all outfield positions and he could be great insurance in case the Mets’ newest addition Andres Torres can’t hold u...

Dickey Is The Best Choice For Mets Ace If Johan Isn’t Ready

With the uncertainty of Johan Santana being ready for Opening Day, the idea of R.A. Dickey being the Mets opening day starter are starting to take shape around Metsland.  Dickey was at the Munson Dinner last night where he addressed that possibility with reporters. I certainly hope that’s not the case. My first reaction would obviously be that I would be honored to do it, but...

Steven Cohen To Buy Minority Stake In Mets

According to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times, billionaire investment manager Steve Cohen, who  is set to become one of the $20 million minority investors in the New York Mets. The deal would not preclude Cohen from pursuing the Dodgers, according to two people familiar with the transaction but not authorized to discuss it. Shakin speculates that Cohen’s motivation in...

Jon Stewart takes jab at Mets during Moneyball interview

We’re big Jon Stewart fans here at The Legend. Actually, let me not speak for the rest of the editorial staff. I am a big Jon Stewart fan. And Stewart  shares as least one thing with Cecilio’s Scribe. He’s a fan of the New York Mets. So, we’re both sorry bastards in that regard. Fortunately for Stewart, he has a national platform to playfully and brilliantly...

CBS Sports Chose Jayson Werth's Contract As One Of Baseball's Worst

CBS Sports has been running through the worst contracts in baseball at all different positions. Who made the list in outfielders and designated hitters? Jayson Werth. Here's what they had to say: Very easy choice. I fully expect a bounce-back season from Werth this year, as several things didn't go his way last season. That being said, the Nationals are paying Werth like...

Marlon Byrd for John Lannan Opportunity Exists

So John Lannan lost his arbitration case to the Nationals and wil be paid $5M for next seasons (as opposed to $5.7M he was asking). Now that the money is settled, the Nats are trying to move Lannan for a position player, preferably a center fielder, so that they can sign Edwin Jackson instead. I'm not quite sure why they want to make that swap, but that seems to be the goal for...

Nationals Continue Rotation Overhaul With Jackson Signing

Today, the Washington Nationals signed free agent starting pitcher Edwin Jackson to a one year contract worth somewhere between $8 and $12 million. I wrote about what the market for Jackson looked like on Tuesday, and I really didn't expect the Nationals to be one of the teams contending for his services. But here we are, and Washington has added their second top pitcher to their...

Murphy ready to work tirelessly at second base

Though the second-base job does not technically belong to Daniel Murphy, it appears to be his to lose heading into Spring Training. But Murphy will hold it throughout the summer only if he proves adequate at the position.

Todd Coffey Signs With Dodgers

This may seem odd, but Todd Coffey is one of my favorite relievers in baseball. I have this thing for middling, fringe-y relief pitcher — Casey Fossum has stolen my heart — and there’s just so much of Coffey to love. How can you not love a teddy bear like him, especially considering he’s an underrated asset? Source: #Dodgers agree with Coffey on one-year...

Nationals win arbitration case against Lannan

The Washington Nationals resolved their final arbitration case on Thursday with a panel of three arbiters ruling in their favor after pitcher John Lannan's hearing Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Fla. Lannan will make $5 million for the 2012 season. He had filed at $5.7 million. The Nationals have a ...

Nats beat Lannan in arbitration; pitcher to receive $5M offer

The Washington Nationals have defeated pitcher John Lannan in baseball's first salary arbitration decision this year.

Favorite Catcher: Wilson Ramos

Anyone who follows on Twitter or knows me personally knows we are big fans of Wilson Ramos and were on edge for the two days he was kidnapped. We were fans when the Twins foolishly traded him for Matt Capps. We expected Wilson Ramos to complement Joe Mauer perfectly, almost as the Girardi to Mauer's Posada.Fast forward to this morning, and I am on the Subway, reading this outstanding...

A Banner Day for Amazin’s

If you’ve got no shot at a banner season, maybe the next best thing is a day.The Mets yesterday announced plans to revive Banner Day — a longtime popular event that was discontinued in 1997 — for their May 27 game against the Padres at Citi Field. The event will...
