Updated by HoJo on 2/12 Frank Francisco has been shutdown indefinitely according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. This was one of the fears going into Spring Training after Francisco underwent December surgery to remove a bone spur in his right elbow. Manager Terry Collins said today that the inflammation was not unexpected. In a press conference that was televised on SNY, Collins was also asked who he saw as potential closer options to replace Francisco if he were unable to start the season on time. “Well we have Brandon Lyon who we brought in, and we still have Bobby [Parnell]. Both of them have closed at this level before. Maybe Josh Edgin can get some save opportunities this Spring. He could also be a possibility.” There is no timetable for when the Mets closer will resume throwing again, Francisco was a huge disappointment last year, his first as a Met, since signing his 2-year, $12 million dollar contract deal during the 2010 offseason.
