PLAYERS: Jairo Perez
TEAMS: New York Mets
The New York Mets signed free agent second baseman Jairo Perez to a minor league deal according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America.Perez, 25, is coming off a solid showing in the Venezuelan Winter League where he batted .342/.407/.591 with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 35 RBI in 149 at-bats.Last season he played for the Independent League Kansas City T-Bones of the American Association.Perez was initially signed by Minnesota as a non-drafted free agent in 2006, But after suffering one injury after another, including undergoing Tommy John surgery, he was eventually released by the Twins after the 2012 season.Seems like a nice under the radar signing that could prove useful. I’m sure the deal included a Spring Training invite, although Eddy doesn’t mention it.

Mets should bring back David Aardsma

With spring training just around the corner, the roster for the 2014 Mets looks to be rounding into shape.  Although all the roles on the team have not yet been defined, the team still looks to be lacking in veteran bullpen arms.  The Mets as much as any other team should know the value of quality arms in late innings due to the plethora of long extra innings games they enjoyed...

How Clayton Kershaw’s mega-deal affects the New York Mets

Matt Harvey When I heard the news that Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw signed a 7-year $215 million dollar contract extension, my first thought was jeez that’s a lot of money! My attention then quickly turned to how does this effect the New York Mets? Kershaw’s contract can only mean one thing for New York: bad news. As of now, the only Met comparable to Kershaw is...

Bobby Parnell: “In my head I feel like I’m still the closer”

Mets closer Bobby Parnell went on the disabled list after a perfect inning of relief on July 30 and did not return, eventually undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck. It was an unfortunate end to his first season as the team’s full-time closer, as he had a 2.16 ERA and 22 saves in 50 innings before landing on the shelf. Parnell, now 29 and ready for spring training...

Ricky Otero – 45th Round Success Story

While Brandon Villafuerte was selected and signed by the Mets in the 66th round of the 1994 MLB June Amateur Draft and was the deepest pick the Mets ever signed that made it to the Major Leagues, he did not make it to the majors as a member of the Mets.So who holds the distinction of being the deepest pick that made it to Queens after originally signing with the Mets? That distinction...

Where will the Mets be by Memorial Day?

Last year, I said that the 2013 season should be separated into two halves: Pre-All Star and Post-All Star break. The reason being was that the New York Mets had every intention of slowly promoting some of their Triple-A talent to the major leagues but because of the built-in attendance draw stemming from the All-Star Game being held at Citi Field there was no rush. Zack Wheeler...
