They thought that they could get into the ring with the heavyweight champ of the world, and hold their own. They didn't even last one round... What a terrible job by Omar Minaya in trying to manipulate a market he clearly misread and misplayed. Omar would have been far better off never making an offer to Lowe, rather than teasing his fan base with an offer he knew was never going to be accepted, on a player he never intended to fight for. When you really want a player, the least you could do is actually meet with the player, the way the Braves did with Lowe, and the way the Mets did with Frankie Rodriguez, Carlos Beltran and Billy Wagner. When you really want a player, you don't offer him $30 million dollars less than market value via a fax to the agents satellite office.
