In 2009 Octavio Dotel wanted to return to his roots with the Mets and I noted in this post. It's funny that post is title the kiss of death because at the time anyone who expressed interest in playing for the Mets seemed to sign elsewhere. Dotel didn't return and since then has been an effective late inning reliever for the White Sox, Pirates, Dodgers, Blue Jays and Cards, also played for the Rookies but didn't do so well ( 2010 - 8 appearances, 5.05 ERA). In 2011 Dotel signed a one year deal with the Jays for 3.5M then went on to appear in 65 games posting a 3.50 ERA, 0.98 Whip, 2.8 BB per nine, 10.3 SO per nine and a 3.65 BB/SO ratio. His biggest deterrent is his age. The Mets are strong players for right-handed reliever Octavio Dotel, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions. Dotel, who celebrated his 38th birthday last week, posted a 2.61 ERA for the Cardinals in October after compiling a 3.28 ERA, 32 strikeouts and five walks for St. Louis in 24 ...

Mets Are In No Hurry To Make Moves: HURRAY!
I trust everyone enjoyed their bird last week. Thanksgiving always whets my appetite for the funtime follies of the off-season, the Winter Meetings. This is the MLB uber-convention. This is the time of the year when owners, GMs and their staves, writers, hangers-on, wannabe executives and even the stray ballplayer or two converge on a hotel somewhere warm for four days and we...
Q&A with Cardinals GM John Mozeliak
The World Champion St. Louis Cardinals have done little since defeating the Texas Rangers in a thrilling seven-game series that ended almost exactly a month ago.
But that will likely change in the near future.
General manager John Mozeliak and the Cardinals front office brass will travel to Dallas Sunday for the start of Baseball's Winter Meetings, where they will likely begin...
Mets looking for new backup C, Paulino on the outs
“In Ronny Paulino’s first season in New York, the team did not view him as a diligent worker, adequate defensive catcher, or offensive force off the bench, and some are pushing to replace the arbitration-eligible backstop,” according to the Daily News.

When are the Mets going to do something?
The countless number of e-mails in my inbox today can mostly be summed up like this: “What is taking so long? When are the Mets going to do something?”
Yes, things have been quiet. But, it’s not just quiet for the Mets, it’s quiet for pretty much every team right now (short of a few small deals here and there).
Why? Well, I think teams were taking a wait-and...
New York Mets Tidbits: Parnell, Garza, Wilson
Still no closer?
Is it possible that it’s some Jedi mind trick to say they don’t have a closer but Bobby Parnell is actually the closer?
Mets fans aren’t happy with Parnell but he was only given half a chance. He would close then be in the 7th inning the next day. You have to throw him to the wolves and see if he can sink or swim. Parnell did have a knuckle curve...
Top 50 Prospects: #35 – Carlos Martinez
#35 Carlos Martinez
St. Louis Cardinals
DOB: 9/21/1991
Previous Rank: N/R
ETA: 2014
The Cardinals have a very solid system, and starting pitching is probably where it shines the brightest. As a 19-year-old across two stops including 10 starts in the FSL, Martinez finished the year with a sub-4.00 ERA and 98 strikeouts in only 84.2 innings pitched. He also managed to hand out...
Players A to Z, Matt Holliday
Matt Holliday plays outfield for the St. Louis Cardinals. He is among the best position players in baseball, posting a WAR at 5.0 or above in each of the last five seasons. Even in his injury plagued 2011, he managed to hit the 5.0 mark exactly. He gets on base, hits for power, fields his position well and even runs decently. Basically, Matt Holliday is the type of player teams...
Inbox: Analyzing roster, backup plan for Pujols
Will Lance Berkman move to first if Albert Pujols departs? Where will Skip Schumaker play in 2012? Beat reporter Matthew Leach fields this and more in the Inbox.
And Nick Evans
The Pirates signed Nick Evans to a minor league deal last night, according to the New York Daily News. Evans has played bits and pieces of the last four seasons with the Mets as a utility first baseman/corner outfielder with very little power. That doesn't sound terribly exciting, but Evans does have a respectable .295/.360/.489 line against lefties, with six of his eight career...
Mets have not been in contact with agent for Matt Capps
A day after the agent for Jonathan Broxton said he didn’t think his client would end up in New York, a representative for another free agent closer said that he hasn’t heard from the Mets since the GM meetings:

Mets showing interest in Rauch and Lidge
The Mets continue to show strong interest in free agent relievers Brad Lidge and Jon Rauch, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.
Michael Baron (Posted by Nov. 5, 2011): Rauch could be an interesting candidate for the bullpen this winter. Like Lidge, Rauch is someone who will be looking to rebound and re-establish himself next year, and he will probably come cheaper than...
Cubs' interest in Albert Pujols could be a bluff
