It looks like the Mets are taking some time away from their focus on pitching to see if they can fill a vital spot on the bench. Several sources are confirming that former Minnesota utility player Nick Punto, is being targeted by the Mets. Lavelle E. Neal of the Star Tribune in Minnesota, revealed that the Mets have gone as far as requesting medical records on the scrappy utility player. The Twins want infielder Nick Punto back as a starter or a utility player and will meet with Punto's agent, Jeff Caulfield, during the meetings. Caulfield has received calls from several teams, including the Phillies and Mets, with the Mets even looking at Punto's medical records. Punto has almost no power and owns a career batting average of .252. Last season he returned from an injury and batted .284 in 338 at-bats playing mostly shortstop and second base.
