Current Mets manager Terry Collins and former skipper Davey Johnson have been selected as coaches for next month's All-Star game at Citi Field. Johnson, currently Washington's skipper, managed the Mets to their last World Series title in 1986. They were picked Thursday by San Francisco's Bruce Bochy, the NL's manager. Detroit's Jim Leyland, the AL manager, also chose coaches with Mets' ties: Robin Ventura of the Chicago White Sox and John Gibbons of the Toronto Blue Jays. Ventura played for the Mets' last NL pennant winner in 2000 and Gibbons is a former Mets player and minor league manager. The All-Star game is July 16.

The Need To Extend Terry Collins’ Contract

If Terry Collins and his staff aren’t the problem as GM Sandy Alderson suggested, then why not extend their contracts through 2015, or at least, 2014? If they aren’t the issue and considered part of the solution, it would seem a prudent action if for no other reason but send a message to the players the organization has a plan. The Mets do have a plan, don’t they? Few things...

Collins Named Coach For Upcoming All-Star Game

Current Mets manager Terry Collins has been named as National League coach alongside former Mets skipper Davey Johnson for the 2013 All-Star game at Citi Field. The two were designated by Bruce Bochy on Thursday, the current skipper for the San Francisco Giants, who will manage the National League at this years Midsummer Classic. The announcement marks Collins’ second straight...

Collins’ Job Is Safe, Backman Rubs Some People The Wrong Way

The Mets have assured Terry Collins that his job is not in danger and his future with the team will be discussed when his contract expires at the end of this season, two sources told Newsday. Not only is Collins safe, there have been no conversations about Wally Backman as a potential replacement, either for this year or beyond. In fact, Backman’s bold guarantees this week about...

Mets’ Collins, Marcum Not Believable In Rotation Issue

It is difficult to believe either Terry Collins or Shaun Marcum regarding the New York Mets’ upcoming rotation decision to accommodate Zack Wheeler. Whether he’s ready or not – and even he said he didn’t pitch his best at Triple-A Las Vegas – Wheeler is on his way to start the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves. The Mets already bought the...

They Don't All Get Trophies, Terry

I can almost ... almost deal with Terry Collins putting Daniel Murphy at first base instead of Lucas Duda if it was for a decent reason. And after the Mets latest loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday, Collins hinted at sound reasoning: "Hey, look, Dan Murphy is a good first baseman. He's a very good first baseman. Lucas Duda hasn't had a ground ball all year long."...

Mets To Go With Six-Man Rotation

Now this is a good idea… Terry Collins just spoke to reporters and said when Zack Wheeler is promoted for his first start on Tuesday in Atlanta, the Mets will go with a six-man rotation for at least one turn. Here is what it looks like: Thursday vs Cardinals: Matt Harvey Friday vs Cubs: Shaun Marcum Saturday vs Cubs: Jon Niese Sunday vs Cubs: Jeremy Hefner Monday at Braves...

Your Contradiction Of The Day

I'd be remiss if I didn't lead this off with the latest Terry Collins contradiction, fresh off the conveyor belt. From June 11th, on the subject of Jordany Valdespin at second base with the demotion of Ike Davis: "The major thing is that, as we look down the road, this does allow us a chance to play this guy. When you break down his tools, he’s got as good tools...

Alderson: Montero Is A Long Shot To Be Promoted To Mets In 2013

Echoing what Terry Collins told reporters on Friday, Sandy Alderson told season ticket holders at Citi Field this morning, that Rafael Montero is a longshot to be promoted to the Mets this season. He cited an innings limit as the reason and said he’s currently about 70-80 innings away from being shutdown for the season. Last season, Montero tossed just 122 innings and he is already...

Alderson Preaches Patience, Will Look To Add MLB Talent To Team In Next Six Months

This morning at Citi Field, Sandy Alderson, Terry Collins, and a few of the players, participated in a Q&A session with season ticket holders. We have John Delcos there and will file a full report later, but here’s a quick summary for you to chew on until then. Alderson said that he believes the team has reached the stage where he can begin to add veteran major league talent...
