New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson confirmed to Jon Heyman of CBSSportsline.com,that the Mets plan to offer David Wright a contract extension during the season. “I would expect sometime before the season’s over, we will have a conversation,” Alderson told Heyman. “I’m hopeful he’ll be here a long time.” According to Heyman: By making an offer in season, it gives the Mets time to consider trades during the winter should the sides not come to an agreement. Wright has not in any way suggested publicly that he’d like the Mets to take care of him financially, and to the contrary, has gone out of his way to make it a non-issue. But people around the team believe he likes being a Met and will be receptive to an offer. Despite Wilpon’s out-of-character comment last year, Wright had an excellent replationship with team higherups. …While the Mets didn’t strongly pursue their other home-grown star Jose Reyes last winter, there are several differences between this situation and that one. The biggest one is that the Madoff situation has been resolved favorably, meaning the Mets-owning Wilpons have no immediate threat to their ability to own the franchise, or presumably operate like a big-market team. This deal, should they complete it, should top Ryan Zimmerman’s $100-million, six-year extension with the Nats completed this spring. Wright’s offensive numbers are slightly better than Zimmerman’s, suggesting $100 million is the floor to any realistic deal. Wright makes $15 million this season, and the Mets have an option for $16 million next year that they plan to pick up.” For Mets fans — or at least this Mets fan — this is extremely good news.  Wright has been the face of the franchise for so long that it would not only seem weird, it would just be wrong to see him in another uniform.  One of the many reasons why the Mets should work out a contract with Wright is to finally have a home grown — fan favorite — play his entire career with the club. And, of course, he’s pretty awesome at baseball. #extendtheman

Mets Finally Cut Acosta As Turner Heads To DL, Schwinden and Quintanilla Called Up

Following Monday’s 8-4 loss to Philadelphia, the Mets made several roster moves: After leaving the game with an apparent ankle injury, Justin Turner will be placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained ankle. To replace the replacement to the replacement for Ruben Tejada, the Mets have promoted infielder Omar Quintanilla from Triple-A Buffalo to presumably be the everyday shortstop...

R.A. Dickey – Is Mets Knuckleballer An All-Star?

Photo by Ed Leyro/Studious Metsimus (Yeah, that's right. I took it. Not bad, huh?) On Sunday, R.A. Dickey pitched 7⅓ innings of shutout ball against the Padres, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out ten batters.  The 10-K performance gave Dickey 29 strikeouts over his last three starts (20⅓ IP).  It also helped in lowering his ERA to 3.06, a number Dickey had...

Unlikely Heroes Push the Mets Past Phillies, 6-3

Omar Quintanilla. Jeremy Hefner. Scott Hairston.  If someone told me prior to tonight’s game that those would be the names of the offensive stars of the night for the Mets, I’d have said this team was in danger of being swept tomorrow.  But that isn’t the case, as the Mets are in position to take yet another series from the Phillies tomorrow on the strength on some big offensive...

Roster Shakeup: Acosta, Schwinden, Quintanilla and What’s Next

Manny Acosta was finally DFA’d today as the Mets made some roster moves. If you watched today’s game, the writing was on wall for Manny pretty much immediately. He came into the game with the Mets down a run and promptly gave up two hits and then some how struck out a batter. Then he gave up a three run bomb and the Mets were basically out of it from that point on. Acosta leaves...

Pre-game: Philadelphia Phillies (26-25) at Mets (28-22)

Good afternoon Mets fans and welcome to another stupendous day of baseball! Tonight the Mets take on the Phillies in the rubber game of their three game series. For the second time this season, Dillon Gee will take on Cliff Lee in a battle of men with short last names that also happen to rhyme. In the last Gee vs. Lee game, the Phillies lefty was the better starter, but the Mets...

Mets 6, Phillies 3

Jeremy Hefner earned his first victory in the majors, highlighting the occasion by homering for his first big league hit as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 on a rainy Tuesday night. The 26-year-old rookie became the first major league pitcher to hit his first homer in his first win since 2002, when Dennis Tankersley did it with San Diego, STATS LLC said. Pinch...

All Hail…Minaya?

The question I am about to ask if one that pains me to even strike the keys on the keyboard to type out, but as the Mets continue to pile up wins it is beginning to become a question that needs to be asked—is this unprecedented success the result of the new front office regime led by Sandy Alderson or a tribute to Omar Minaya actually being worth a damn as a G.M.? Look at the facts...

Depth and Opportunity

The Mets have no depth on their 40-man roster. You’ve heard that since the offseason. I preached it here consistently during spring training.  I believed this club had an outside chance of winning about 85 games; maybe even competing in a pennant race for a second Wild Card. What would derail them was their depth, or lack of it. The names were not exciting. Vinny Rottino, Jeremy...

Oh Em Gee: Cliff Lee, Dillon Gee Pitch in Mets-Phillies Rubber Match at Citi Field

Photo from ChadMoriyama.com - there are two more angles so check it out. Lee vs. Gee: one of the best matchups we get now and then, and not just namewise.  The two have matched up before and provided some six-letter pitching matchup excitement. Dillon Gee is 4-3 with a 4.92 ERA.  He can be stellar and he can be mediocre.  Cliff Lee is winless, but had been stellar most of the...
