Johan
I'm in favor of any deal that prevents the picture below from becoming a reality.

  • This would quickly become the worst trade in Mets' history. Not to mention, Reyes is 5 years younger than Santana. Or that he is the key to the entire offense. I have to think this is made up stuff, I can't see Omar ever trading Reyes.
  • I know Reyes is a extremely popular figure in New York, but I'd find it hard to believe that acquiring a two time unanimous Cy Young winner in his prime would be worse than trading Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano.
  • From Jayson Stark's ESPN column this morning- "We keep hearing people speculate that for the Mets to get Johan Santana, they'll have to trade Jose Reyes. Well, if that's true, Santana is heading for some other destination, because teams that have inquired about Reyes' availability this winter, even in a monstrous deal, report that the Mets refuse to trade him, talk about him or even think about talking about him. So anyone who predicts he'll eventually be a Twin (or anything else) is "dreaming big-time," says an executive of one team. Ditto David Wright, by the way."
  • awesome article...sox scenario sounds like they give up least....but the yankees would kidnap him...dig the Mets...tough decision for them
  • Santana is overrated considering how much he will make. Haren's small contract makes him much more valuable over the next 3 seasons. I don't know why all these teams are willing to unload their farm systems for a guy who will be a free agent next year. Someone give me a GM job.
  • The price tag is not the issue here, obviously. The issue is in the value Santana brings to the company. Hand in hand with being the best pitcher in baseball, he has been the only player in Twins history to fill up the Metrodome when he played. Attendance might not change in Boston or the Bronx, but a million more people will tune in to watch him pitch on television.

No one else in the league is as desirable to watch than Johan Santana, he's one of kind, unprecedented, brilliant. Giving up Reyes would be no big deal here. It just gives the Mets the opportunity to buy Hanley Ramirez in a couple years.
  • If the Mets want to contend i think parting with Reyes to land one of the best pitchers in the game is the move to make. Santana with the Mets offense will be even more dominating than he is now. Just think, would the collapse have happened if santana was pitching in the rotation? SO I say Part with Reyes and a prospect or two and land Santana!
  • Good to hear someone argue this side. Are you a Mets fan?
  • First of all, I'm stunned that someone just said "Santana is overrated".

I need to collect my thoughts after that.
  • agreed. that's like saying the pope isn't catholic.
  • I said overrated considering how much he makes. I did not say he was overrated in terms of talent. Learn to read please.
  • Did you know that the players only get 40% of the gate? In the NFL it's 55%. Who cares about bargains. I mean, Carlos fu@$*ng Silva will be getting $12M a year.
  • Why? Best hitter in baseball is getting paid a potential $300+ million contract... Why wouldn't the best pitcher in baseball ask for at least half? He's the best pitcher in baseball; therefore, saying he's overrated is a big giant joke.
  • How can a salary determine whether a player is overrated or not? Is it Torii Hunter's fault that he's now being overpaid at $18 million a season? So does Santana's $25 Million really look that outrageous when you put it in between Torii Hunter's $18 Milion and Alex Rodriguez's $27.5 Million? This is the way the contracts are going to be from now on. Marquee players in weak free agency markets will receive big paychecks. Welcome to the new MLB.
  • you guys don't understand. I am saying trading for Danny Haren would be the way to go. He is under contract for 3 more years and he is still in his rookie contract. After this season, Haren will probably make 7.5M and Santana will get 25M, who is the better bang for your buck? Haren in a heart beat. Santana would have to have an insane year to even compete with Haren's paltry salary.
  • Minaya keeps saying he's looking for a marquee guy... you said it best with Haren's contract, he's still getting a rookie salary, because he's still young and unproven. He has no where near the expirience that Santana has. Down the stretch who would the Mets want more? Santana or Haren, and if Minaya is smart, he goes after Santana hard. The Mets can't handle another season like last year's, and I don't know if he has the job security for another season like that, too.

Sure Haren has nasty stuff, that splitter kills children, BUT Santana's circle change is the best in the bigs, and it kills even more children, that thing is on warning from the UN for crimes against humanity.
  • Damn he looks good in pinstripes! LOL
  • Hey, settle down, I throw up in my mouth every time i look at that thing.
  • laughs!...Red Sox Nation "member"....even if you hate us with the yankees, I bet you it's less...most of nation hates the thought of Johan on "that 2000 last time won. team"...peace to Mets and Sox fans everywhere
  • Haren unproven? He pitched well in the world series for the Cards several years ago and he's done even better for the A's. I think Beane just threw up in his sleep.
  • So you're refering to him in a relief roll where he pitched just over 8 innings total in the post season? Come on now.

  • Fact is this. It does not come to money with the big market teams. The money is there. Its a simple question then of who would you rather have, Santana or Haren? A good pitcher who will ask for a lot of money after one more good year or the most dominating pitcher in the game.
  • Now i hate the Yankees more than anyone, but i will say johan does look good in the pinstripes. And the twins will get the better end of the deal with the filling of there needs in hughes, cabrera, and kennedy
  • Why is everyone all over Cabrera? He isn't that good! I could bat .279 in the Yankee lineup, they'd pitch to me and I could hit loopers over short all day long, as long as I was in front of Jeter and A rod. He is the Yankee's version of Coco Crisp (with less range) and when I see a deal from the Yankees involving him I think of Lester, Crisp and two prospects for Santana. Come on now, just give us Hughes and Cano or Buchholz and Ellsbury.

If Smith settles for anything less than Cano/Hughes or Buchholz/Ellsbury i'll be pissed, At least try to win with Johan and trade him before july 31st at the worst. 2 first round picks from his free agency would probably turn out better than Melky or Coco.
