It was announced early Wednesday that the Miami Marlins purchased the contract of Rockford Aviators pitcher Nick Grim. This will be Grim's second stint in affiliated ball. His first go-round came courtesy of the Baltimore Orioles. They drafted him in the 17th round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft out of California Polytechnic State University. Playing in the Gulf Coast League, Grim appeared in six games, walked nine, and surrendered 11 runs in ten innings. He was released this past April. He appeared in 17 games for the Aviators as a spot starter. His final ERA was 5.00 and his 2-4 record isn't the best in the world, but Grim did perform admirably in the later part if the season recording a 3.64 ERA in the month of August. There have been some inconsistencies in Grim's performance, however a 96mph fastball will get the attention of scouts everywhere. And if baseball isn't funny enough, this isnt the first time the Marlins have shown interest. While attending Monterey Peninsula College in 2011, Grim went 6-2 with a 2.81 ERA while striking out 95 batters in 83 innings. At the time, the Florida Marlins drafted Grim in the 14th round. He opted not to sign, but instead decided to go back to school. At Cal Poly he was 3-2 with a 4.74 ERA in 21 appearances. Normally these numbers wouldn't garner any interest from teams, but the chance to continue in independent baseball has allowed more people to see him, and see past the crooked numbers. Baseball is a numbers driven game, but it doesn't always tell the whole story. Devon is the Founder and Executive Director of The GM's Perspective.
