Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks might go on the disabled list with hamstring tightness.

Middlebrooks did not play Monday and no timetable for his return, according to ESPN Boston.

The rookie slugger experienced tightness in his left hamstring after stealing second base in the ninth inning against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

"He feels better today than he did yesterday, and better than he expected to be today," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Monday. "It's not discolored, and that's good, but it's going to be some days."

Middlebrooks also had issues with the hamstring issues in May.

Nick Punto started at third base Monday but Valentine did not say how much he would play in Middlebrooks' absence. Brent Lillibridge, who came to Boston from the Chicago White Sox in the Kevin Youkilis trade, might also see time at third base.

If Middlebrooks goes on the DL, Lillibridge and catcher Kelly Shoppach would be the only position players available off the bench. Valentine said he expects a roster move to happen.

The Red Sox could bring up a position player from the minors and send down one of their 13 pitchers from the 25-man roster.

Boston can also add a 26th player to the roster for Saturday's doubleheader against the New York Yankees under a new rule that allows rosters to expand for twinbills.
