AP Photo It seemed inevitable, and it happened. Will Middlebrooks has been optioned to Pawtucket due to terrible offensive numbers this season. The Red Sox have optioned third baseman Will Middlebrooks to Triple A Pawtucket and purchased the contract of infielder Brandon Snyder. Middlebrooks is hitting .192 this season with a .617 OPS and lost his position to Jose Iglesias after going on the disabled list with a lower back strain in May. He had not played in five of the last six games. The 24-year-old was expected to be a middle-of-the-order hitter for the Sox this season but never got on track. Sitting on the bench in the major leagues was restricting his development. Who would have thought that Jose Iglesias would out-perform Will Middlebrooks at the place, leading to Will's demotion. Certainly not me. Is this a result of the injury? Or, does he just plain suck for some reason? Whatever the cause for the terrible performance, it has resulted in a short trip down I-95 to AAA. This may be perfect for Will. Going to Pawtucket, where he played well during his rehab performance, to regain what he has lost since last season. We can only hope he can regain the spark he had in 2012. Confirmation of full time Jose Iglesias (for now) is just what the Ted's Army crew needed to lift our spirits. Yeah, I'm finally on the Jose Iglesias train, and I love it.
