Tuesday afternoon, the Sox optioned struggling incumbent third baseman Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A Pawtucket, adding more security to Jose Iglesias’s tenure in Boston. The Sox called up Brandon Snyder to replace Middlebrooks on the roster. Snyder, who spent time in the Orioles and Rangers organizations before inking a minor-league deal with the Sox in March, is hitting .266 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI for the PawSox. In order to accommodate Snyder on the 40-man roster, the Sox moved backstop David Ross — who has been battling concussion symptoms — from the seven-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. Since Iglesias was hauled back up to the big-league team May 24 when Middlebrooks went on the DL with back spasms, the 23-year-old Cuban native has posted a lin...

Your Morning Dump...where Iglesias is still en fuego.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. We are at that point in Jose Iglesias’ season where a multiple-hit game no longer draws notice. Seventeen of his 34 games have featured at least two hits. He had three last night. When somebody does a neat...

Jose Iglesias Will Only Continue to Improve With Confidence Being Everyday Starter Brings

The Red Sox are through with platooning, position shuffling and roster finagling. Jose Iglesias is now Boston’s everyday starting third baseman. How many people saw that coming six months ago? Manager John Farrell‘s decision to option Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday meant that the slick-fielding Iglesias, who came into spring training with serious doubts about...

Middlebrooks Sent To AAA; Holt Or Sutton Up?

Mediocre Will HuntingIt's looking more and more likely that the deeply slumping Will Middlebrooks will be sent down to AAA soon and either Brock Holt or Drew Sutton will be called up to Boston. It makes no sense to have Middlebrooks languish in his ineffectiveness one or two times a week—he'd benefit much more with steady at-bats at Pawtucket. This move would also allow...

Will Middlebrooks Optioned to Pawtucket, Red Sox Call Up Utility Man Brandon Snyder

Brandon Synder's call-up a surprise to him

Photo from Providence Journal Brandon Synder has been called up to replace the struggling Will Middlebrooks, which I think surprised a lot of people. According to ESPN Boston, he is only .125 on Pawtucket's recent road trip, which, as anyone who knows baseball can tell you, isn't good. But sometimes young guys thrive in the major leagues after struggling in the minors (see...

MVP Candidate Carlos Gonzalez Visits Fenway as Red Sox Give Third Base Role to Jose Iglesias

Even with all the struggles Will Middlebrooks has endured during the 2013 campaign, after such a great rookie year it’s still a bit weird to hear the news that the Red Sox presumed third baseman of the future has been sent down to Triple-A. So while the Red Sox try to set up their struggling sophomore with some regular at-bats in Pawtucket, that means another “of the future...
