Known during his time with the Minnesota Twins for his hard-to-spell last name, his trademark bubble gum bubbles and his defense at first base, Doug Mientkiewicz will now be known as a baseball manager. The 38-year-old Mientkiewicz was named Monday as the manager of the Fort Myers Miracle, the Twins High-A affiliate, for the 2013 season. "I'm excited to join the Minnesota organization and Fort Myers Miracle coaching staff," Mientkiewicz said in a statement, "I've always considered myself a Twin." Mientkiewicz spent the majority of his pro career in Minnesota, playing seven seasons with the Twins from 1998-2004. He then bounced around the league and spent one year each with the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring in 2009. Mientkiewicz was a career .271 hitter and won a Rawlings Gold Glove in 2001 as Minnesotas first baseman. Since retiring as a player, Mientkiewicz recently served as the hitting coach for the Ogden Raptors, a minor league affiliate of the Dodgers. After he was drafted by the Twins in the fifth round of the 1995 MLB Draft, Mientkiewicz began his professional baseball career with Fort Myers, spending two seasons there before advancing to Double-A New Britain. Now, hes back where he got his start. "I began my professional baseball career in Fort Myers," he said. "Now, I'm excited to start my managing career with the Miracle. We are going to hustle on and off the field and bring an exciting brand of baseball to the fans." Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter.
