Miguel Tejada left the Oakland A’s in 2003 for bigger and better things (read: money). Now 37 and a free agent, that man that sparked “Miggy Magic” and inspired drum chants in the Coliseum wants back in Oakland.

Tejada spoke with the SF Chronicle‘s Susan Slusser on Tuesday night, and she files this report:

“I would love it,” Tejada told me by phone from Florida. “I have always loved the A’s. That’s the organization that gave me a chance when I was a little kid in the Dominican. They opened all the doors for me. …. That’s my family.”

Tejada told me he knows that the A’s have lost third baseman Scott Sizemore for the season, and he hopes GM Billy Beane might consider giving him a minor-league deal, as he recently did with Manny Ramirez.

“Tell Billy to give me a call,” Tejada said. “I don’t want big money. I just want to play.”

Tejada spent the first seven seasons of his career at shortstop in Oakland and won the 2002 AL MVP while with the A’s. But last season with the Giants, he hit just .239 before being released with a few weeks left in the season. He blames the poor campaign on not being happy playing for the club.

Because Tejada also says he’s good friends with the A’s big signing this offseason, Yoenis Cespedes, he thinks presence would benefit the young slugger.

However, as Slusser reports, Tejada remains a “long shot” to join the team. Tejada in the last few seasons has added playing third base to his repertoire. And while, the A’s do need to fill a hole at third after Sizemore tore his ACL last Saturday, they’re likely to turn to their farm system.

But man, oh man would a Tejada signing fit right in with this bizarre A’s offseason Billy Beane has put together.
