Mike Carp has been dealing with some shoulder irritation, but he’s ready to go for Sunday’s series finale against the White Sox.
Carp will bat sixth and play first base as the Red Sox look to complete a three-game sweep. Carp delivered a big pinch-hit RBI single to send the Red Sox past the Orioles on Wednesday, and he was originally slated to start Thursday’s game before being scratched late because of the shoulder issue.
Mike Napoli, who has been showing improvement at the plate of late, will get the day off Sunday. John Farrell said after Saturday’s game that he thinks Napoli’s foot issue has subsided a bit, but it’s clear that the Red Sox want to keep the first baseman fresh for the stretch run.
Will Middlebrooks, who joined Dustin Pedroia as the only two hitters in Boston’s lineup without a hit Saturday, will also be out of Sunday’s lineup. Xander Bogaerts, who played short in Saturday’s win, will play third base and bat ninth.
Sunday’s complete lineups can be found below.
BEST OF MAXIM
In an attempt to bolster their infield depth for stretch run, the Boston Red Sox acquired veteran infielder John McDonald from the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night in exchange for Single-A pitcher Nefi Ogando. The Red Sox will become McDonald’s fourth team this season but Boston mainly acquired him for his leadership on and off the field and versatility. Despite only hitting...
John McDonald is finally playing in his own backyard.
McDonald — a New London, Conn., native, Scituate, Mass., resident and Providence College product — is now suiting up for the Red Sox in his 15th major league season. While it marks McDonald’s seventh major league team and fourth of 2013, the 38-year-old journeyman always viewed Boston as a potential destination.
BOSTON — Shane Victorino doesn’t want to talk about it. Then again, there might not be much to talk about.
Victorino, who is typically a switch-hitter, has been hitting solely right-handed of late, even against right-handed pitchers. It’s a very unique adjustment by the 32-year-old outfielder, although the reasoning behind Victorino’s change might actually be quite simple...
With the first of September came a flurry of roster moves.
The Red Sox announced a number of moves before Sunday’s game against the White Sox. Boston has added pitcher Rubby De La Rosa, outfielder Quintin Berry, catcher Ryan Lavarnway and infielders Brandon Snyder and John McDonald.
De La Rosa and Lavarnway were recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Berry was selected to the active...
(Photo by Darren McCollester/Getty Images)If John Lackey were married to the Boston Red Sox lineup, he could sue for non-support. Once again, Lackey delivered a quality start and saw his teammates get skunked in a 3-0 loss to Detroit. The right-hander went 7 1/3 innings giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out five. Over Lackey's last 10 starts, Boston has averaged...
Felix Doubront is back to his dominating ways.
After a pair of spotty starts in August, the left-hander was lights out against the Giants on Aug. 21, twirling an eight-inning gem, and Doubront followed that start in San Francisco with another stellar performance against the Orioles on Monday night in the series opener.
The O’s only threat came in the second inning when Doubront...
The Boston Red Sox lost a pair of outfielders, Jacoby Ellsbury
and Shane Victorino, during yesterday’s weekend finale against the Chicago
White Sox. Ellsbury exited with a nagging thumb injury, while Victorino is
dealing with a left hip contusion. While the ailments were enough to send both
players to the showers early, manager John Farrell hopes to have Ellsbury and
After back-to-back strong performances from Felix Doubront in his last two starts, the left-hander struggled mightily when he took the mound on Sunday.
Doubront tossed three solid innings against the White Sox, but he was chased early after giving up four runs in the fourth inning. The outing marks the shortest start Doubront has had since Sept. 1, 2012. Despite the shaky start,...
BOSTON — The Red Sox are 1-0 in September. Maybe this team is different.
The Red Sox have had a special season, to say the least, but there’s long been an elephant standing outside of Boston’s clubhouse: September. The Red Sox went 7-20 during their historic September collapse of 2011, only to follow up with a 7-22 end to 2012. That history has been enough to create a hint...
Jake Peavy's known for studying hitters. It certainly gave him an edge against his former teammates.
Peavy pitched seven strong innings, Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits and the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 7-2 on Saturday night for their sixth win in seven games.
Acquired in a three-team, seven-player deal July 30 that sent infielder Jose Iglesias to Detroit, Peavy...
The Boston Red Sox look to continue their great play as of late as they look for their eight win in their last nine games. After sweeping the American League Central last place team the Chicago Whitesox the Red Sox look to continue that against the Detroit Tigers. The big question is if reigning American League Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera will play in this series after resting...
Ryan Dempster returned from his MLB-enforced hiatus – courtesy of a five-game suspension after hitting Alex Rodriguez with a pitch on Aug. 18 – to earn the win as the Red Sox beat the White Sox 4-3 Friday night in the first of their three-game series at Fenway Park.
Dempster kept the White Sox hitless until the fifth inning when Paul Konerko led off with a double. But after...
Red mentioned all of the AL East foes the Red Sox will be facing this month, but he forgot they also have to face a playoff contender in the Tigers. Today’s shutout was just another in a long line of ineffective performances against a quality pitcher. And Fister is the Tigers’ third or fourth starter.
The loss was another tough luck day for Lackey, who once again pitched well...
Well, it's not the infielder you expected. Today, on the waiver trade deadline, the Phillies traded infielder John McDonald and cash to the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Nefi Ogando. The Red Sox are McDonald's fifth organization this season. Ogando is 24 years old and has never played above class...
The Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) take on the Tri-City ValleyCats (Houston Astros) in the final regular season home game at LeLacheur Park on Sunday evening.
The Spinners sit atop the New York-Penn League’s Stedler Division by a half game over the ValleyCats entering Sunday night and only four games remaining in the regular season.
Jamie Callahan takes the mound for the Spinners...
