The Red Sox might be doing their homework in case their reported deal with Mike Napoli falls through. It doesn’t mean they’re going to get the same grade.
Reports are starting to surface that the Sox are talking with free-agent first baseman Adam LaRoche, just in case they’re unable to finalize the deal with Napoli that was first reported more than three weeks ago. But while LaRoche had the better season offensively in 2012, and is a Gold Glove caliber first baseman with far more experience than Napoli at the position, Napoli still remains the better option.
Despite LaRoche’s spike in production with the Nationals last season — which saw him finish sixth in NL MVP voting — and the step backward Napoli took following a breakout 2011 campaign, Napoli features the better overall track record offensively. The former Rangers slugger has a better career on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS, as well as more wins above replacement (WAR).
Plus, as we’ve already seen, Napoli’s swin...

Today the Boston Red Sox finalized their one-year, $9.5M deal with shortstop Stephen Drew. Forgetting for a moment the painful memories dredged up by having a Drew on the roster, this is yet another strange acquisition. While Drew has some lingering upside, he’s clearly not the high-end player many thought he’d become. Nor is $9.5M chump change. As they did with Shane...
The Boston Red Sox officially announced their acquisition of
Joel Hanrahan yesterday and named the veteran as their closer entering the 2013
season. Boston acquired Andrew Bailey last offseason, a player they expected to
be their closer of the future. It’s now unclear what the future holds for
Bailey, who will enter spring as the Red Sox setup man to Hanrahan, reports Jon...
The Boston Red Sox are pursuing free-agent first baseman Adam LaRoche, according to a report from SB Nation Boston's Jen Royle. LaRoche is seeking a three-year deal, despite having multiple two-year offers on the table. One of those offers is from the Washington Nationals, the team which LaRoche spent the previous two seasons. The 33-year-old batted .271 with 33 home runs...
Nine days after shortstop Stephen Drew and the Boston Red Sox agreed to a one-year, $9.5 million deal, the contract was finalized Wednesday. Drew, 29, split last season between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Oakland Athletics. He became a free agent when the A's rejected a $10 million mutual option on his contract in October. Instead, Drew received a $1.35 million buyout...
The Red Sox certainly improved their bullpen this winter.
In addition to guys with closing experience like Andrew Bailey and Alfredo Aceves, the team added more live arms in Joel Hanrahan and Koji Uehara. That gives Boston one of the deepest bullpens in the American League, but is it the best?
The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham think so, but his colleague Nick Cafardo disagrees,...
The Boston Red Sox have completed a six player deal that will bring Joel Hanrahan to the team in exchange for Mark Melancon and prospects. It is a deal that was first reported last weekend, but has now been consummated and made official on Wednesday.
The Red Sox have made no secret that Hanrahan will serve as the team’s closer, and that there will be no competition between he and...
In an offseason in which many Boston Red Sox fans thought Jose Iglesias would be the opening day shortstop for the team in 2013, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon that Stephen Drew was signed to a 1-year deal worth $ 9.5 million (with an extra $500,000 in incentives). The signing means that Iglesias presumably [...]

The Baltimore Orioles rode a historic performance from their bullpen to the postseason. Let's just say the Boston Red Sox were inspired. While much attention has been paid to the various free agent signings throughout the lineup (Shane Victorino, Stephen Drew, Jonny Gomes, et al.) and in the rotation (Ryan Dempster), the Red Sox also have quietly bolstered one of the few...
The Red Sox have already nipped one problem in the bud.
Assistant general manager Brian O’Halloran said during a conference call Wednesday that the plan is for Joel Hanrahan to enter spring training as Boston’s closer. That puts an abrupt end to the debate as to whether the newly acquired Hanrahan or Andrew Bailey would pitch the ninth inning for the Red Sox this season.
Red Sox fans received a lot of hip joke material on Wednesday, as the club announced that it has acquired closer Joel Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt from the Pirates in exchange for Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimental, Jerry Sands and Ivan De Jesus.
The sooner we get all of the Steve Holt Arrested Development gags and Tommy Hanrahan Slap Shot puns out of the way, though, the sooner...
After days of speculation and rumors, the Red Sox and Pirates have completed a trade that will send closer Joel Hanrahan and IF Brock Holt to the Red Sox in exchange for 1B/OF Jerry Sands, IF Ivan De Jesus Jr., RHP Mark Melancon, and minor league RHP Stolmy Pimentel. Jim Bowden of ESPN.com was the [...]
And so while you're sitting around waiting for Adam LaRoche to sign that three year deal with the Red Sox, say goodbye to the ugly old Washington Nationals batting practice caps, and say hello to the new ones.
Via Paul Lukas of UniWatch/ESPN.com, a sneak peak in the image above of the new red white and blue cap above, right, contrasted with the really ugly old ones. WFY chimed...
