What's the News?

I failed to get out to the second game for Akron last night. I was slated to go with some friends, but we got scared off by the threat of rain and a tough day at work. Either way, it didn't rain, which makes me miffed that the weather plays we me like that. I would like to get out there today for the day game, but that means I need to accomplish my Saturday tasks before 1 PM. So let's get to it.

The second part of this week's Minor League Happenings is up at IPI. Tony has quotes from Charlie Nagy, Columbus' pitching coach, the great starts of Hagadone, Gardner, and White, and his affiliate notebook.

COLUMBUS
The rain DID hit Columbus though and for that, their game got postponed. Saturday will continue as scheduled, with I believe Aroldis Chapman starting this game. Friday's game will be played Sunday as a part of a double header.

AKRON
The Aeros did get their game in and it was a 4-2 loss to Bowie, their second straight after only losing one prior to the series starting.

Paolo Espino started and went five innings giving up two runs off only three hits, but he walked four. CC Lee took the loss after he struggled in his two innings of work, walking three and giving up two runs (one earned due to McBride error). Bright spot was Omar Aguilar, who finally put it together for two shutout innings and recording all but one out via the strikeout.

The offense scored more than they did yesterday, but once again was held in check. Tim Fedroff had two hits, and his first steal of the year and Lonnie Chisenhall doubled home a run. Carlos Rivero also had two hits and he knocked in a run himself.

Russell Branyan's first go with the Aeros? A full nine-inning game at first base and a hit in four at-bats. Not expected to play Saturday, especially after a quick turnaround, but he is expected to start at first in two games in a row next week.

Ryan Edell up for the Aeros as they start at 1:35 today, as I mentioned.

KINSTON
Alex White was on the rough-end of some bad defense in his second start for Kinston as he took the loss in the 4-2 loss to Winston-Salem.

In the fourth inning, WS put up a three spot that included only one hit and a few errors from shortstop Ronald Rivas, who made three in the game to double his season total. Alex White ended up going 4.1 innings, giving up three unearned runs off five hits and a pair of walks. He struck out five but as mentioned, took the loss in large part due to the errors.

Bryce Stowell struck out three in two plus innings of scoreless work.

Kyle Bellows had a hit and two walks that lead to both K-Tribe runs. Rivas tried to make up for his errors with both RBI, but he needed like two more to make up for the three runs he caused.

T.J. House will go for the K-Tribe again today as the series against Winston Salem continues.

LAKE COUNTY

Sweep number three, 9-0 on the year, still the only undefeated team in all levels of baseball right now. MLB, Triple-A, whatever, the Captains are the only one without a blemish after their third consecutive sweep, this time against Lansing with a 6-3 score in extra innings. This is the best start in team history, obviously.

The Potams, or whatever this is being called made their second uh, I guess tandem start of the season and half was good. The starter was Austin Adams and he went four very strong innings, giving up no runs off two hits and two walks. Marty Popham on the other hand struggled in his three innings. He gave up a three spot in his first inning of work and for the game he totaled three walks and four hits.

The Captains battled right back in the sixth to tie it up though and then would add a three spot in the tenth inning to win it. The offense was lead by Kyle Smith, who was 3-5 with a run scored and a double. He set it all up for Greg Folgia and the bottom of the lineup, all of which knocked in all the runs. Greg Folgia had two, Chris Kersten, Casey Frawley, and Argenis Martinez all had RBIs and then leadoff hitter Delvi Cid had one off two hits.

Bo Greenwell continues to rake, gathering two more hits including a double.

Mid-Afternoon start for the Captains as they go back home to face Fort Wayne with Clayton Cook on the mound.
