What's the News?
I have no news other than to tell you that I will be at the Akron Aeros opener tonight at Canal Park. Bowie comes into town for the first home series of the year. I'll also be at the game tomorrow night, but tonight's opener is going to be mainly used for scouting as tomorrow I'll probably be there with friends, so I won't be paying as close attention to things. Expect a full-report on guys like Lonnie Chisenhall. There is a small chance that Russell Branyan is there as the Clippers end their home stand and he may need more rehab games.
If you are going to the Aeros game, it is magnet schedule giveaway. I'm sure there will also be some sort of championship ceremony with the banner or whatever it is they'll do.
COLUMBUS
The Clippers won yet again off a late hit, this time off the bat of Brian Bixler, when he knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to lead Columbus to a 3-2 victory over Toledo.
Carlos Santana was up to his old tricks with two more hits and a walk, as well as scoring a run. He's now hitting .423 on the season with a .516 OBP. In addition to Bixler's RBI, Anderson Hernandez and Brian Horwitz knocked in runs, making the bottom of the lineup very productive for the Clippers.
Hector Rondon rebounding from his bad first start, going six innings and giving up just one earned run (two total) off five hits and two walks, including five strikeouts. Good to see from Rondon.
Jess Todd pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
Russell Branyan ended his stint with Columbus by hitting a double as he was DHing. He will not travel with the team on the road, so either his rehab assignment will end and the Indians will activate him, or he'll come to Akron to finish it off as they begin their home stand.
Columbus looks to win again and sweep Toledo in their mini-two game series with Jeanmar Gomez on the mound today.
AKRON
Trenton managed to put a damper on the party Akron was having by finally toppling them with a four run seventh inning to win 4-3. Trenton avoids the sweep.
Bryan Price pitched an inning of scoreless relief before getting tagged for the four runs in the seventh. Only two of the runs were earned, but Price surrendered a two-run shot in the inning. It ruined a Scott Barnes start that went five HITLESS innings. Barnes gave up only one walk on the day and struck out three.. Great effort by Scotty there.
Jared Goedert gave Lonnie Chisenhall a day off at third and replaced him in the lineup both stat-wise and position-wise. Goedert had two hits and knocked in two of the Aeros three runs. Three doubles for the Aeros with backup catcher Alex Castillo collecting two of them and Josh Rodriguez the other.
Nick Weglarz went without a hit, but he walked and knocked in the other run.
Akron makes the trip home for their Home Opener against Bowie tonight. As mentioned, I'll be at the game both tonight and Friday. It's going to be fun. Connor Graham is on the mound for the Aeros as they take on an equally good Bowie team.
KINSTON
Kinston dropped the last two games of their series with Wilmington after getting shutout 1-0, and falling victim to great pitching yet again.
The K-Tribe could only muster two singles from Donnie Web and Ron Rivas. Everyone in the lineup but Karexon Sanchez struck out, and the top three hitters, Jordan Henry, Abner Abreu, and Jason Kipnis, all struck out three times. 14 strikeouts on the game for those of you who are keeping track.
All of that lead to Nick Hagadone being hung out to dry as he put in five innings of unearned baseball. He was charged with the loss after he gave up an unearned run when converted first baseman Roman Pena committed a throwing error in the third inning.
Hagadone struck out six compared to just one walk, definitely the tough-luck loser in this one. TJ McFarland and Travis Turek each put in two scoreless innings.
Kinston has an off-day, let's hope they recharge their offense.
LAKE COUNTY
Mama, it's that man again! Bo Greenwell helped the Captains stay undefeated yet again with another huge game as the Captains beat Lansing (SAL FASANO POWER!!!!) 7-3.
Greenwell collected three hits and knocked in two of the Captains runs and he is hitting .440 on the season. Delvi Cid scored twice and knocked in a run off his two hits, and Roberto Perez also had two hits. Very productive top of the lineup. Cid stole two more bases to up his total to six on the year.
Kyle Smith The Shortstop and Argenis Martinez both added two hits of their own and Greg Folgia had three himself. Total the Captains banged out 15 against Lansing pitching. Sorry Sal!
The pitching was done by Joe Gardner and he proved his first game was no fluke. Gardner picked up his first professional win after he struck out seven through five innings and gave up one earned run. He let up only two hits and two walks.
Matt Packer and Antwoine Hubbard both threw scoreless frames to close the game out.
The Captains look to continue their incredibly blistering start with their second game against Lansing. Danny Salazar is on the mound for the Caps.
