The Tribe Daily:
What's the News?
We only had one victory in the minor league system yesterday, but it was quite the victory.
COLUMBUS
Boy Yohan Pino sure did himself a lot of favors by picking yesterday's game against Louisville to put forth a good effort as the Clippers beat the Bats 3-1 and Pino out-pitched young Cuban phenom Aroldis Chapman.
Pino went seven scoreless innings, giving up just four hits and one walk while recording six strikeouts. He bested Chapman who went five innings giving up one run off one hit and four walks. Pino is now 2-0 on the season.
The Clippers got a run off Chapman and both Bat relievers. Jason Donald scored twice without a hit, but he did steal two bases. Both Shelley Duncan and Brian Horwitz knocked in runs without hits via the sac-fly. Carlos Santana singled home the other run in the sixth.
Columbus will have a double-header against Louisville today with Scott Lewis starting a game and likely Jeremy Sowers starting the other. This works out well for him instead of having to come out of the bullpen.
AKRON
Akron dropped their third straight to Bowie 3-2 to put them at the .500 mark for the season.
Ryan Edell pitched well, but was burned by a fourth inning two-run home run. Brandon Waring, who hit the home run, would strike again in the eighth inning to give Bowie the lead. Edell didn't walk a batter in six innings and he recorded five strikeouts. Bryan Price took the loss.
Jared Goedert took Nick Weglarz's place in left field and third in the order and recorded two hits. Lonnie Chisenhall did the same and Matt McBride knocked in Tim Fedroff in the first inning. Cord Phelps added a solo home run, his second of the year, in the sixth inning. Fedroff stole his and the Aeros second base of the season.
Akron sends Zach Putnam to the mound on Sunday to stop this skid and avoid a sweep at the hands of Bowie.
KINSTON
Kinston added two in the ninth, but it wouldn't be nearly enough as they were topped by Winston Salem again to lose their sixth game of the season, 7-3.
In his race to commit more errors than games Kinston loses, Ronald Rivas notched number seven which led to to an unearned run off starter T.J. House. Just five innings, four total (three earned) runs off six hits and two walks for House as he took his second loss of the season.
Dave Roberts gave up two runs in his two innings and Santo Frias gave up one in his inning of work.
Donnie Webb, Kyle Bellows, and Nate Recknagel did their jobs. Recking Ball and Webb had three hits each and combined all three runs scored. Bellows knocked in two of the runs and Doug Pickens knocked in the other.
Kinston will look to avoid the sweep against Winston Salem today. Joey Mahalic in place of Alexander Perez goes for the K-Tribe.
LAKE COUNTY
It ends here for the Captains. Lake County suffered their first loss of the season yesterday when they fell to a team with a stupid apple logo with a pot on it's head, 6-2.
Chun Chen hit a solo home run, his first of the year, Bo Greenwell doubled and scored a run off an Adam Abraham hit for the Caps only runs of the day.
Clayton Cook struggled on the mound with walks as he let four Tin Caps reach base in addition to five hits that led to three runs. Matt Packer also gave up three runs in 2.1 innings of work while Antwoine Hubbard went 2.2 with just one hit, no walks or runs and three punch outs.
Trey Haley will try and get in the win column himself and give Lake County their double-digit win on the season.
