The Tribe Daily:
What's the News?
We only had one victory in the minor league system yesterday, but it was quite the victory.
COLUMBUS
The Clippers swept the Louisville Bats in Sunday's double header and now look to complete a four-game sweep on Monday.
Game one was won 6-4 behind the offense of Carlos Santana and the second was won 3-0 behind a combined bullpen effort from Josh Tomlin and company.
Santana had three RBI in 2 hits for the Clippers in their first game. Wes Hodges knocked in two more and tripled and Brian Buscher hit a sac-fly to complete the scoring. Jason Donald doubled, walked, stole a base and scored two runs off two hits.
Scott Lewis improved to 2-0 despite giving up three runs off four hits, but he didn't walk anyone in his six innings of work. Jess Todd finished off the game with a rocky seventh to earn his first save.
Game two saw Josh Tomlin go three innings, Frank Herrmann go two, and Mike Gosling and Saul Rivera each go one. Rivera picked up his second save and Herrmann his first win.
In round two Santana was DHing and he knocked in two more runs with a double.and Jason Donald knocked in the other, also doubling.
Donald and Santana have been the best hitters for the Clippers thus far, with Donald hitting .333 and Santana .417.
The Clippers will look to finish off the sweep with Carlos Carrasco on the mound in a rematch of last Tuesday's game.
AKRON
The Aeros avoided a sweep at the hands of Bowie on Sunday by shutting out the Baysox 4-0.
Neil Wagner picked up his fourth save by pitching a scoreless ninth as well as recording an out in the eighth. Zach Putnam was brilliant on the mound, going six scoreless and giving up just five hits while striking out four.
Putnam was aided by one man in this one. Jared Goedert starting in left for Nick Weglarz, who has now missed three straight, hit a two run home run and knocked in four total runs off two hits in this one. That was all the Aeros run production.
Cord Phelps and Johnnie Drennen had two hits each and Phelps is now second in the EL in batting average.
Akron welcomes Altoona into Canal Park for a three game series. Scott Barnes goes for the Aeros.
KINSTON
The K-Tribe dropped yet another game, their fifth straight, as they got swept by Winston-Salem 7-6.
This was especially painful as they mounted a comeback late only to let Winston-Salem hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Steve Smith took the loss and his first blown save of the season. Joey Mahalic gave up three runs off nine hits in four innings and Matt Langwell pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
There are some positives to take away from this one though as Kinston's offense started to get things going. Jason Kipnis tripled and knocked in two runs and Abner Abreu hit his first double of the year and collected two hits.
Kyle Bellows and Nate Recknagel also knocked in runs
Kevin De La Cruz makes start number three as the K-Tribe travels to Wilmington for a series.
LAKE COUNTY
That was a short-lived losing streak. Lake County dropped their first game of the season and then bounced right back to get their tenth win of the season as they beat Forth Worth 7-6 in yet another Captains specialty.
Trey Haley had an interesting outing. He only gave up one hit, but it was the worst hit you could give up. After he walked the bases loaded (and walked five on the game), Haley served up a grand-slam home run. It was the only blemish in his four inning outing.
Francisco Jimenez sort of saved the day though. He did give up two runs, but he went five strong innings to pick up his fourth win. He didn't walk anyone and struck out four.
By doing what Jimenez could do, it allowed the offense to get rolling and who else but Bo?
Bo Greenwell was 3-for-4, which raised his average to .442, and he knocked in three runs, one of which was his second home run of the year. He also stole his sixth base of the year.
Uh Kinston, you ready for this kid? He'll be there soon.
Jeremie Tice also knocked in two runs, including the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Who was the winning run? That guy named Bo.
Kyle Smith and Caey Frawley also knocked in runs on the day.
Joe Gardner goes for the series win for the Captains as they take on Fort Wayne in the final game of the season.
