First Pitch: Locke’s Anti-Regression, Cumpton a Bonus, and Jamestown

I didn’t have one specific thing I wanted to write about, but a few notes I was thinking about. So I went with more of a notes column, with three different topics below. Jeff Locke hasn’t regressed, but instead has improved his game. **About a month ago we were talking about Jeff Locke being a regression candidate going forward. That sparked the usual responses of “what if...

Andrew McCutchen dances back to second base, literally, after pickoff bluff (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes. Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen displayed some fancy feet as he danced back to second base, literally, after falling for a bluff of a pickoff move by Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Stephen Fife during the third inning of Friday night's game at PNC Park. McCutchen had reason to be feeling a little relaxed, as he had...

Pirates Notebook: 9 Best Perspectives on Cole’s Debut

Players and managers alike were impressed by the velocity and command on Cole’s fastball. (Photo Credit: David Hague) We all watched Gerrit Cole impress in his Major League debut Tuesday night. I wrote about it. You (hopefully) read it, and now it’s on to the next one. But before it is on to the next one, I wanted to compile the best insight about Cole becoming a part of the...

A.J. Burnett Won’t Make His Next Start

A.J. Burnett will miss his next start with a right calf issue. (Photo Credit: David Hague) The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t made a decision on who will go down to make room for Charlie Morton on the 25-man and 40-man roster. One issue is that A.J. Burnett has been scratched from his start tomorrow with a right calf injury. Burnett made the team aware of his injury yesterday. If Burnett...

First Pitch: The Pirates Have Had Some Amazing Starting Pitching Depth

Jeanmar Gomez is one of 10 starting pitchers the Pirates have used this year. Photo Credit: David Hague Earlier today I was recording a podcast with James Santelli and Tom Bragg, talking about the rotation, and what moves would need to be made once guys like Jeanmar Gomez, James McDonald, and Wandy Rodriguez returned. Most of the conversation surrounded the fact that the Pirates...

NL Central Notes: Pirates are on a roll, but can they maintain it?

ST. LOUIS -- With a strong bullpen, solid rotation and a lineup led by one of the game's rising stars in center field, the Pirates appear poised to end the longest streak of losing seasons in U.S. team sports history. Oh, wait. You say you've heard that before. For the past two years, in fact. Indeed, 2013 is feeling a lot like 2012 and 2011, when center fielder Andrew...

Pirates Allow Season-High 17 Hits, Collect Only Three in Morton’s Debut

Andrew McCutchen was the only Pirates batter to get an extra-base hit. (Photo Credit: David Hague) That was the worst game the Pirates have played all season. Pittsburgh pitchers surrendered a season-high 17 hits in the 10-o loss, continuing the struggle after allowing 15 base hits Wednesday night. Starter Matt Cain and the Giants held the Bucs’ lineup to three hits after it totaled...

The return of Charlie Morton

Let's be straight about this: Charlie Morton is probably my favorite Pirate. The guy came through the minors with all of the talent in the world, but couldn't get it right in the big leagues. He completely scrapped his approach and rebuilt himself from the ground up, turning in one of the more pleasantly surprising Pirate performances in recent memory in 2011. It seemed like...

Game 65: Pirates 12 Giants 8

On Sunday, we were worried that the Pirates' offense was never going to wake up. On Tuesday, the Pirates scored eight runs. On Wednesday, the exploded for 12 runs and 18 hits. Those 18 hits were a result of multi hit nights from Starling Marte (four singles), Jordy Mercer (three singles), Andrew McCutchen (a double and two singles), Gaby Sanchez (a double and two singles), and...

Game 67 Preview: Pirates vs. Dodgers

Dodgers (28-37) at Pirates (39-27) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs kick off a weekend series against the last-place LA Dodgers tonight. Yep, last place. Despite spending tons and tons of money over the past year, the Dodgers have struggled (injuries haven’t helped) so far this season. That said, they are still a very talented club and swept the...

Pirates 12, Giants 8

The Bucs broke out the bats to neutralize a pretty ugly night of pitching on Tuesday, and the result was another comfortable victory against the Giants. We finally saw the Pirates really explode on offense – they pounded a season high 18 hits and scored a season high 12 runs. Barry Zito was bad (as he has been all season on the road), but the Pirates were able to take full advantage...

Locked in and Cutched out

Jeff Locke delivered another dominant start, and Andrew McCutchen had a role in all three Pirates runs in tonight’s 3-0 win over the Dodgers. What else is there to say about Jeff Locke?  He simply shut down the opposing team’s lineup, as he’s done so often this season.  He needed just 75 pitches to get…
