First Pitch: The Actual Value of Platoons

Last night I wrote about how the problem with the Pirates offense this year has been that three positions in the lineup struggle against left-handed pitching. Pedro Alvarez, Neil Walker, and the right-field duo of Travis Snider and Jose Tabata have all struggled against lefties this year. Platoons are very underrated. Or should I say the left-handed side of the platoon is underrated...

Sixty-year-old gets shot at pitching

The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Paul Risso , a right-handed pitcher out of the College of San Mateo, with the 113th overall pick in the sixth round of the 1973 Major League Baseball Draft. Unfortunately, a career-ending shoulder injury in Risso's final college game ended his big league dreams. Or so he thought. Now 60, Risso is trying to make a comeback, and in May, the civil...

A.J. Burnett made an effort to stand up for teammate Pedro Alvarez on Monday, but he ended up in an embarrassing situation instead. The Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher was stunned and disappointed to learn that Alvarez, who is third in the NL with 22 home runs this season, was not chosen by David Wright to represent [...]

Pirates' Neil Walker out again; doesn't require MRI

The Pittsburgh Pirates were once again without second baseman Neil Walker last night, as he's recovering from an injury to his side that he sustained over the weekend. While the ailment was enough to keep Walker out of the Pirates' lineup, it wasn't deemed so severe as to require an MRI, according to Steven Petrella of MLB.com. On Sunday, Walker told reporters that...

A.J. Burnett Needs To Work On His Spelling

A.J. Burnett took to Twitter on Tuesday night with very good intentions, but he ended up getting a hard time instead from a whole bunch of folks. Check out his struggle below. Will somebody...

Pirates 5, A’s 0

They had to wait a while, but the Pirates finally snapped the losing streak with a very solid shutout victory over Oakland – their first win ever against the A’s. Francisco Liriano delivered the “stopper” performance the Bucs were looking for. The lefty continues to be absolutely sensational – seven efficient shutout innings brought his ERA down below 2, and he struck out...

Demolition Derby Outrage Against Wright

“Yo, dude? What’s up with that? Come on — El Toro’s born and bred in NYC!” That was one Pirates’ fan’s reaction when learning that David Wright had snubbed Pedro Alvarez for the home run derby on Sunday. Alvarez is second in the National League in homers and fifth in MLB. Last night, when he walloped his 23rd home run, this was how Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown called...
