Pirates Notebook: Why Tony Sanchez Has to Earn 26 from 59

Tony Sanchez wore No. 19 and No. 26 at times in the minors, but not so in Pittsburgh. (Photo Credit: David Hague) SAN FRANCISCO — Baseball, as we like to say, is a game of numbers. For no one is that more true than for Scott Bonnett. The Pirates’ longtime clubhouse manager — known to almost everyone as “Bones” or “Bonesy” — is in charge of assigning the jersey numbers...

Frank Coonelly: Replay System May Not Increase Game Length

Team President Frank Coonelly does not agree that MLB’s new challenge system will make games longer. Major League Baseball’s planned challenge system for controversial calls will not necessarily make games longer, according to Pirates president Frank Coonelly. Cutting down long-winded arguments between managers and umpires is part and parcel to the replay system MLB unveiled...

Pirates place Marte on DL with bruised hand

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed leadoff hitter Starling Marte on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a bruised right hand. Marte was injured when he was thrown out trying to steal third base in the eighth inning of Pittsburgh's 4-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 18. Marte's right hand was stepped on during the play. He remained in the game but hasn't played...

Liriano’s Rough First Inning Can’t Be Overcome in 6-3 Pirates Loss

Tony Sanchez hit his first Major League home run, but even that moment did not go perfectly for the Bucs. (Photo Credit: David Hague) SAN FRANCISCO — Nothing went right for the Pirates in their 6-3 road loss to the San Francisco Giants, not even the good parts. Pittsburgh’s best starting pitcher this season, Francisco Liriano, was far from his sharpest. He allowed four runs in...

First Pitch: MTV VMAs — The 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates Version

I don’t know why, but the MTV Video Music Awards are a must watch for me every year. It’s probably fueled by nostalgic reasons, remembering back when the VMAs were amazing. This year they opened with Lady Gaga. That can’t compare to the year where they opened with The Smashing Pumpkins, which was an amazing performance that didn’t feature Lady Gaga’s ass. I still watch...

Below are the pitching Game Scores* in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system from the last week. The top ten and the bottom five starts are broken down below the chart. First Pitch: The Most Important Two Weeks of the Year

The Cardinals took a half game lead in the NL Central today. The next two weeks are going to be the biggest weeks in the NL Central playoff race. This is something that gets said before every series between the Cardinals and Pirates, Reds and Pirates, or Cardinals and Reds. It’s true for all of those matchups, because this is a tight division race, and every game counts. But the...

Game 130: Giants 4 Pirates 0 (a late recap)

This recap is late coming because I'm just not sure there's much to say about yesterday's game: Ryan Vogelsong absolutely dominated the Pirates, and any chance that the Pirates had to comeback was spoiled by AJ Burnett being left on the mound for an inning too long. That's pretty much it. The Pirates had an opportunity over the weekend to finish their road trip with...

AJ Burnett takes on Ryan Vogelsong with first place on the line

For the very first time in the month of August, the Pirates are not alone in first place. Last night's loss to the Giants coupled with the Cardinals' third straight win over the Braves put St. Louis into a tie with the Bucs, which is the first time the Cardinals have been in first place since the double-header at PNC Park on July 30th. The Cards are losing to the Braves right...

Brewers-Pirates Preview

After faltering at the end of a road trip, the Pittsburgh Pirates are looking to get back on track before a crucial series. The Pirates will try to accomplish that feat by adding to their recent dominance over the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game set that begins Tuesday night.
