Toledo 8, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 2

Dellin Betances’ season-long control problems continued tonight, as he lasted just 3.2 innings while allowing six walks. Betances also allowed three runs on five hits. There was a silver lining though, as Betances struck out seven batters tonight. The Yankee bats were unable to get much going tonight – only 3B Brandon Laird was able to put together a multi-hit game. In his second game since being demoted, Eduardo Nunez managed just one hit in four trips to the plate, though he did make it count with a 5th inning RBI single.

Trenton 10, Binghamton 1

Shaeffer Hall was in complete control tonight, tossing 6.2 shutout innings to improve his record to 3-4 on the season. He allowed just five hits and did not walk a batter while striking out four. Corban Joseph and Luke Murton both homered for the Thunder during an eighth-run 8th inning which broke this one open. Joseph was arguably the player of the game, as he went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Eastern League home run leader Melky Mesa failed to hit another, but did manage to go 2-for-4 on the evening.

Lakeland 5, Tampa 3

Jose Ramirez had another solid start today, but saw the Tampa bats fall silent as they couldn’t get together enough run support to come away with a victory today. Over six innings, Ramirez struck out eight while allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits. Neil Medchill hit his fourth home run of the season for the Yankees, a second inning solo shot. Leadoff man Ramon Flores went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored to raise his season average to .247. What really hurt Tampa today was errors – Kyle Roller, J.R. Murphy, and Kelvin Castro each committed one.

Savannah 4, Charleston 3

Despite three Savannah errors, the RiverDogs couldn’t do enough to put a ‘W’ on the board today. Brett Gerritse threw a decent game, allowing just two runs on three hits, but was able to give Charleston just 4.2 innings. The real pitching problem came when Ben Paullus entered the game. For the eighth time in ten games, Paullus allowed at least one earned run, and his ERA on the season ballooned to 9.58. Tyler Austin’s recent slump continued, as he went 0-for-4 on the evening and is now 7 for his last 42. Ben Gamel was the only RiverDog to pick up multiple hits on the evening.
