There are two relics remaining from the 80's, and one of them was just guaranteed a spot on the Toronto Blue Jays 25-man roster...Omar Vizquel. The other, Jamie Moyer, is battling for a slot in the Colorado Rockies rotation. The 44 year old Vizquel is set to enter his 24th MLB season. He earned the utility infielder role with the Jays with a great spring (.433/.952 in 15 games) and tremendous clubhouse reputation. He's currently 159 hits shy of 3000 for his career, and is unlikely to obtain that goal unless he sticks around another 3 years. Gotta admit, it would be fun to have him still playing the field into his late 40's.Speaking of late 40's, Moyer is fully recovered from his TJ surgery that cost him all of 2010 and is vying for a job with the Rockies. He's currently 2-0, with a 2.77 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 11 K in 13 IP. Not bad for a man is nearly double the age of most of his teammates. It will be Grand Pappy's 25th season if he's able to latch on.Each o...

Omar Vizquel Makes Toronto Blue Jays’ Roster

Forty-four-year-old shortstop Omar Vizquel has made yet another Major League roster, having earned a spot with the Toronto Blue Jays. The hopeful Hall-of-Famer, who will turn 45 in less than one month, is batting .433 through 15 exhibition games with the Jays, adding a bunt single and scored a run in Toronto’s recent win over the Orioles. The 11-time Gold Glove winner and three...

44-year-old Vizquel added to Blue Jays' roster

Omar Vizquel was added to the Toronto Blue Jays' roster Wednesday a month before his 45th birthday, making the backup infielder the oldest active position player in the major leagues. The 11-time Gold Glove winner had signed a minor league contract on Jan. 23. He spent the previous two years with the Chicago White Sox as a utilityman and mentor to younger players. Moyer, 49, makes Rockies — and history

Jamie Moyer showed up in spring training convinced he could make the Colorado Rockies rotation. He spent the last six weeks proving his point. The Rockies announced Friday that the 49-year-old Moyer will make the team and will start the second game of the regular season, April 8, at Houston. Moyer becomes the oldest starting pitcher to make an Opening Day roster. The announcement...

Twins 4, Blue Jays 1

Omar Vizquel has an abundance of pride. He's also been around long enough to know that there is no shame in accepting a role as the Toronto Blue Jays' utility infielder. The next time Vizquel plays shortstop in a regular-season game he will become the oldest player in major league history to man that position. He turns 45 on April 24, just 19 days into his 24th big league...

Kudos to him for preserving and not only coming back from...

Moyer, Buster and me

Jamie Moyer pitched for the Baltimore Orioles from 1993 to ’95. For much of that time, ESPN’s Buster Olney was the Orioles’ beat writer and I was a columnist for The (Baltimore) Sun. “Write about Moyer,” Buster would tell me. “Nah,” I would reply. “Nothing to the guy.” Buster and I must have had an exchange along those lines a half-dozen times, almost to the...

The Crafty Lefty

Sometimes, age is just a number. Some people age well and some people age badly. It really just depends on how you take care of yourself. When it comes to age in professional sports, getting older is a bit of a curse. There’s a point in a players professional career where teams are no longer willing to pay players the big money or sometimes any money. As Major League Baseball Spring...
