Found August 05, 2013 on Baseball Hot Corner:
This is a quick preview of MLB’s scheduled games for Monday August 5th, 2013. Games - 9 AL Games – 6 NL Games – 3 American League Games (6): Detroit Tigers (64-45) @ Cleveland Indians (62-49) – 7:05 pm Anibal Sanchez (9-7, 2.59) will begin a four game series for Detroit as they travel to the red hot Indians, who have won two straight. The Indians will try to slow Detroit down as they’ve won eight in a row with pitcher Corey Kluber (7-5, 3.77) on the mound. This should be a very good series to start the week with both teams playing very well. This particular matchup is very even, although the big pitching matchup occurs tomorrow. This is a very big series for both teams as the AL Central is becoming a three team race. Cleveland needs to take this series to finally gain the edge over Detroit, and with Miguel Cabrera not completely healthy, now would be a better chance than ever for this Indians club to try to take the division lead. Four game series: August 5th – August 8th Next game ...

Should The St.Louis Cardinals Resign Their Aging Veterans?

The St. Louis Cardinals will have a difficult decision to make during the winter of 2013. Although their focus is currently on making the post-season, as is should be, the Redbirds will have to contemplate the pros and cons of resigning some key free agents. Carlos Beltran, Chris Carpenter, and Rafael Furcal will all be free agents after the 2013 season has run its course. Beltran...

Ho-hum: Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw named NL Pitcher of the Month

St. Louis Cardinals: No more Pete Kozma please

(via TurnersTwist.com) I am glad to see Mike Matheny using Daniel Descalso at short today. In fact, I think it is time to use him and another player (I will tell you who in a minute) even more often. Pete Kozma just doesn’t cut it. I am tired of hearing that Kozma’s defense is why we continue to have to watch in agony every plate appearance. Quite frankly, his defense...

The Los Angeles Dodgers are led at the front of their staff with two studs in Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke and have a solid rookie in Hyun-Jin...

Cards welcome Dodgers -- two road wins shy of NL record -- to Busch

ST. LOUIS -- If you don't recognize the Dodgers who show up at Busch Stadium this week, it's understandable. They hardly resemble the team that lost two of three to the Cardinals at Dodger Stadium in late May. Those Dodgers were mired in last place and their manager, Don Mattingly, was dealing with questions about his job security. Yasiel Puig still was in the minors,...

Shelby Miller has benefitted from extra rest

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has taken plenty of criticism in the past week for possibly playing catcher Yadier Molina so much that he eventually succumbed to a knee injury and a trip to the disabled list Tuesday, but Matheny made an equally smart move by resting one of the team’s other top players. Right-handed rookie starting pitcher Shelby Miller won the fifth...

A huge night for the Baby Birds leads to a 6-1 record. The only loss on the night came from the GCL Cards. Nelly throws wild first pitch at Cards game

YouTube Rapper Nelly disappointed his St. Lunatics Tuesday with a wild ceremonial first pitch at Busch Stadium before the Dodgers-Cardinals game. Cardinals third baseman David Freese was set up behind the plate and, according to Nelly, called for a pitch-out but never reacted to it. Nelly, or Cornell Iral Haynes, Jr., was a standout high school baseball player in St. Louis.  Judging...

Hanley Ramirez suffers injury in Dodgers' 1-0 win over Cubs

When Hanley Ramirez disappeared headfirst into the stands at Wrigley Field on Sunday the Dodgers' chances of winning the World Series might have vanished with him. Ramirez who tumbled into the seats down the left-field line after catching a wind-blown pop up emerged from the seventh-inning wreckage with what the Dodgers described as a "jammed" right shoulder. The preliminary...

Preview: Miller looks to utilize the force versus Dodgers

With their franchise-record road winning streak in the past, the Los Angeles Dodgers are poised to continue their current surge. The NL West leaders look to bounce back from their first road defeat in a month Wednesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. Clayton Kershaw allowed two runs in the fifth inning and lasted six, but St. Louis (66-46) broke things open with three in...

Allen Craig, Dan Uggla and fWAR

I want to be accepted as a modern baseball writer. As such, I have made a conscious decision years ago to be as much of a student of modern baseball statistics as possible with an unfortunately limited brain. It is not in me to create calculations and amazing charts and do all those things possible to build a case. But, at least I have made an effort not to stick in the past and...

Los Angeles Dodgers Team Stats for Current Stretch of 31-7

The Bunt

First and second. No outs. Down by 2.  Pretty good form. Pretty bad decision. The sacrifice was made by Carlos Beltran, he of 19 HRs, 19 2Bs and 3 3Bs in 2013. The runners moved over. And two batters later, the Cardinals had scored 1 run. They wouldn't score again. Wish I could tell you more about that 7th-inning sacrifice. But Matheny declined comment...
