The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed former top prospect Brandon Wood off of waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Wood is a career .178 hitter with only 11 homeruns in 173 major league games. Wood was a first round draft pick and hit 43 homeruns in 2005 at the minor league level. Wood was expected to hit for power when he was recalled but he has just not been able to figure out major league pitching.
Wood is expected to challenge Ronny Cedeno for his job in Pittsburgh. Cedeno has struggled as well both offensively and defensively. He is off to a slow start sporting a .170 batting average. Now he and Wood will fight it out for a starting job.
