CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that the Chicago Cubs have told pitcher Matt Garza that he will likely be traded before the deadline this season- “Cubs star right-hander Matt Garza, who separated himself as the top available starting pitcher with a string of impressive recent outings, has received notice that he will likely be traded after contract talks didn’t produce an extension. Garza is drawing interest from the Rangers, Indians, Red Sox and Cardinals, among others.mTexas and Cleveland seem to be clear players while Boston’s interest might depend somewhat on when star Clay Buchholz returns from injury, which is unclear. Others believe St. Louis is a stealth player in the derby for the red-hot right-hander.” Garza is 6-1 in 11 starts this season with a 3.17 ERA. He has struck out 62 batters while walking 20. Chicago broadcaster David Kaplan thinks Garza could be moved by Saturday- I'm hearing Garza will be traded by Sat. Cubs won't move him though until they get what they want. They won't panic out of fear of injury. — David Kaplan (@thekapman) July 15, 2013 The Indians have a rotation of All-Star Justin Masterson, Ubaldo Jimenez, Scott Kazmir, Corey Kluber and Zach McAllister (assuming he is ready to join the team after the All-Star break.) They also have Danny Salazar, Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Bauer at AAA Columbus who have made spot starts this season. If he were to become an Indian, Garza would push Masterson for the top spot in the rotation. It is not known what the Cubs would be looking for in return, but Garza is playing on the last year of his contract and will be a free agent at the end of the year.
