The Philadelphia Phillies need all of the offensive help that they can get with sluggers Ryan Howard and Chase Utley beginning the season on the disabled list. The team bolstered their bench with the free agent signing of Jim Thome. But can Thome play first base after not playing the position since leaving Philadelphia? If so how many games can he play there? The 41 year old slugger came into Spring Training in phenomenal shape. He knew that Ryan Howard was going to miss some time in 2012 and spent the off season preparing to return to playing in the field. While Thome’s thoughts were more ambitious than the Phillies hope that Thome could maybe play the field once a week, one has to wonder just how many games he can play in the field and not (1) wear himself down and (2) not pop a hamstring or have some other injury put him on the sidelines where he would not give the Phillies what they signed him for.
