Stephen Strasburg has two more starts left this season for the Washington Nationals. With a 7.5 game lead in the National League East, the Nationals are all but a lock to qualify for the 2012 MLB Playoffs for the first time since the franchise moved to the Nation’s capital.
Unfortunately, without Strasburg, after the Nationals officially shut him down for the season following his final start of the year on September 12 against the New York Mets, Washington will be forced to turn the ball over to John Lannan and Chien-Ming Wang.
That sound you hear? It is not a sigh of relief. It is a sigh of extreme panic.
Wang, who’s been on the DL since July 1 with a strained right hip, is 2-3 with a 7.61 ERA in seven games with the Nationals. He was 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA in 15 minor league rehab outings this season.
Not exactly numbers that put your mind at ease if Wang is to take Strasburg’s spot in the rotation.

The Washington Nationals told pitching ace Stephen Strasburg that his last start of the season would be Sept. 12, in order to keep his elbow healthy following his 2010 Tommy John surgery.
That means Strasburg won’t compete in a likely pennant race, even though his team has the best record in Major League Baseball.
