Jake Peavy has an extensive injury history, but when he’s healthy and on his game the Chicago White Sox right-hander can shut down opposing hitters. With the White Sox positioned as sellers this season, Peavy should be one of the pieces the team moves as baseball’s trade deadline approaches. And the two leading suitors for his services are starting to emerge. The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly the two teams leading the charge on Peavy and if the righty can prove he’s healthy, he could be dealt soon. On Saturday Peavy made his first start since June 4 because of a fractured rib. He struggled early, but overcame that and tossed six effective innings to earn a win over the Braves. Representatives from the Red Sox were in attendance at that start. In 12 starts this season, Peavy boasts a 7-4 record, with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. After not pitching a full season in his first two full years with the White Sox, the 32-year-old rebounded in 2012. He made 32 starts, posted an 11-12 record, but also had an ERA of 3.37, a WHIP of 1.10, while tossing 219 innings. He also had four complete games, one shutout and a WAR of 5.0. Again, when healthy, Peavy can dominate. The problem is, he has rarely been healthy since being traded to Chicago by the San Diego Padres. Still, with Clay Buchholz down and not likely to return quickly, Peavy could provide an immediate boost for the Red Sox. The Cardinals also make a ton of sense, and the Baltimore Orioles have also been linked to him. Peavy is signed through next season and is owed $14.5 million.
