The Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs are deep into talks for one of the top players on the trade market this summer. The way things look right now, the Rangers could land Matt Garza some time this weekend. The Rangers actually tried to land Garza last summer, but an elbow injury ended his season prematurely. Now Texas is back at it, trying to land the man many people think is the best starting pitcher currently available via trade. The Cubs and Rangers have reportedly had extensive talks, but the Los Angeles Dodgers are also motivated buyers and would love to land Garza. The Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians have also expressed interest. The 29-year-old Garza would give the Rangers another outstanding option their rotation. The team currently has five starting pitchers on the disabled list, as Matt Harrison, Yu Darvish, Alexi Ogando, Nick Tepesch and Colby Lewis are all sidelined. Garza will be a free agent at the end of the season and if Texas acquires him the team can’t make him a qualifying offer and receive draft-pick compensation if he doesn’t re-sign according to the collective-bargaining agreement. That means if they want to keep him long-term the Rangers would likely have to work out a contract extension in-season. After missing most of the early part of the season with a strained lat muscle, Garza has come on of late and looked fantastic. In 71 innings over 11 starts, Garza boasts a 6-1 record with a 3.17 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. It has arguably been the best he’s looked during his entire career. The Cubs will find a buyer for Garza eventually, but they will probably have to lower their asking price of several elite prospects to do so. As of now, it looks like the Rangers will land him, but things could change if another team ups its offer.
