Background: Miller comes from Brownwood, Texas and attended the local high school. He had an impressive high-school career as he threw four no-hitters and a perfect game. As a senior, he really caught the attention of major league scouts, pitching to a 1.90 ERA and recorded 153 Ks in 77 2/3 IP. Even more important was that he had a fastball that reached 97 mph as an 18 year old. Although he was committed to play college ball at Texas A&M, he elected to sign with the Cardinals, who selected him as the 19th overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. In 2012, he competed for a major league roster spot, but failed to make the team. Instead, he was relegated to AAA.
