Mo Saves a Place in History

Mariano Rivera made quick work of the Minnesota Twins on Monday to notch the 602nd save of his career and write his name in the record books as the all-time saves leader. After tying Trevor Hoffman at 601 in Toronto on Saturday, Mo converted on his very next opportunity – an afternoon makeup game in the Bronx. With the Yankees’ schedule, there was little question that Rivera would break the record in front of the hometown fans. At 41, Mo has been a Yankee all his life. He debuted in ’95 as a set-up guy, a role he kept through the ’96 World Series. The following year, he became “The Closer” and never looked back, saving 30 or more games every season since, including a ridiculous 50 saves in 2001. After Jeter became Mr. 3,000 at home earlier in the year, it was only fitting that Rivera hit his milestone at Yankee Stadium, too. Mo is by no means finished, so expect that all-time saves mark to keep climbing well into the future.
