It was difficult enough for Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Brandon Morrow to lose a start after making only nine pitches.

However, it could become even more difficult for the right-hander depending on the severity of the injury that forced him from Monday's game before he was finished with the second batter of his outing.

He departed because of a strained left oblique after his third pitch to Washington's Bryce Harper in the first inning of the Blue Jays' 6-3 defeat.

Now he awaits the results of further testing Tuesday.

"It's probably substantial in terms of what he's dealing with right now," manager John Farrell said.

Morrow said, "I felt it on the first pitch to Harper. I felt like a stabbing in my side when I threw it. I just put it out of my mind for the second pitch, just threw it like nothing happened, hoping it was nothing. Threw that one and felt the same thing. Then, of course, I was thinking about it the third pitch and wasn't able to deliver the ball very well.

"It's very frustrating of course when you have to come out that early for something like that. Hopefully it will just be a best-case scenario. We still don't know what that is."

Morrow allowed a leadoff double to Steve Lombardozzi, and when Harper hit a single off reliever Chad Beck to score the run, it ultimately made Morrow the losing pitcher. The Nationals scored another unearned run in the inning, and the best the Blue Jays could do was make it 2-1 in the home half of the first on a home run by Colby Rasmus.

The Nationals pulled out to a 6-1 lead before pinch hitter an Gomes hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

Morrow does not know what caused the injury.

"I didn't feel any different (on the first pitch to Harper)," he said. "Didn't land strange or do anything. It's hard to say. I don't know what happened.

"It's sore just from it happening today, and I hope it will be better tomorrow. Hopefully it won't feel any worse."
