If I told you that Jose Reyes would be out of the lineup (stiff calf) and that despite missing their leading base stealer, the Mets would go ahead and swipe seven anyway, you would probably call me crazy (lots of people do). Yet, that is precisely what happened last night in San Francisco as the Mets topped the Giants by the score of 7-4.
Playing without the services of not only Reyes but also Carlos Delgado and J.J. Putz, the Mets relied on their baserunning ability to get the win. The key steal came in the ninth as Carlos Beltran swiped third in a critical spot, which the Mets manager appreciated; "You want to see the aggressiveness," manager Jerry Manuel said. "He knows that if he gets there, we're that much closer to a sacrifice fly, a bloop, or something to get in the run."
As it turned out, he would score the winning run on a clutch single by none other then David Wright.
In less then good news it appears that slugger Carlos Delgado may well be heading towards surgery to repair his hip. The Mets need his pop in the lineup---hopefully he will not miss significant time.
The Mets try to make it two straight tonight but the pitching matchup is not favorable; Livan Hernandez vs Tim Lincecum.
