From Larry Brown Sports:

Alex Rodriguez could have been embarrassed and pouted after being replaced in the bottom of the 9th inning during Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday, but the Yankees DH was leading the cheers after pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez delivered an improbable game-tying home run in his place, and later another home run to win it.

Rodriguez had been struggling during the series, going 1-for-9 with five strikeouts in the first two games against Baltimore, and 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Wednesday. Despite calls for him to be dropped in the batting order, manager Joe Girardi kept the struggling slugger in the third spot. But with one out and the Yankees trailing 2-1 in the 9th inning, Girardi opted to pinch-hit for A-Rod with Ibanez.

Ibanez, who was 1-for-3 in the series, crushed a home run off Orioles closer Jim Johnson to tie the game at two and send it to extra innings. He later clubbed a second-deck walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the 12th and win the game 3-2.

The clutch home runs will no doubt put Ibanez in a heralded class of Yankees postseason heroes. The bold move by Girardi paid off. And those who questioned whether Rodriguez was more focused on individual production rather than team success might have to evaluate their thinking.

  • A Rod has hit over 600 Hrs in his career. I think one or two from Raul is cool with him.
  • Hard to be bitter if you're A-Rod. Ibanez won that game as much as a player can by himself in the end. It'll be interesting to see the next lineup. It'll be tough to not give A-Rod a chance to swing through the funk given his ceiling. Equally hard to ignore a hot bat.

Ibanez saves Yankees again with tying, winning homers

NEW YORK -- The manager known for robotically following his "binder" full of stats took one of the biggest gambles in postseason history because, he would say later, it was a "gut feeling." That gut feeling, as well as the guts to follow through on it by New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi, helped his team pull off a wild 3-2, 12-inning victory over the Baltimore...

The status of Yankees fans through two games

The Yankees and the ALDS have an eerie relationship. It serves as either a small stepping-stone towards alarger pedestal or a heartbreaking roadblock of a larger goal. The Yankees aren’t like your favorite baseball team. The Baltimore Orioles have already had a successful season, anything in addition to making the ALDS is icing on a historic cake. They are playing with house money...

A-Rod's struggles at plate hurting Yankees

Alex Rodriguez carried the New York Yankees to the 2009 World Series title with an amazing power display. His more recent postseason memories all too often involve ending with a swing and a miss. Father of Yankees manager passes away

The father of New York Yankees manger Joe Girardi has died, the team announced Thursday. Jerry Girardi passed away Saturday at a residential health-care facility in Metamora, Ill. The truth? A-Rod needs to be benched

It looks desperate. It's not. Joe Girardi's decision to bench Alex Rodriguez for the winner-take-all Game 5 of the American League Division Series is a matter of common sense. Based on the way he's been swinging -- long before this series began -- A-Rod is not the New York Yankees' best option to start against right-handed pitching. Raul Ibanez is the better designated...

A-Rod benched for Game 5 vs. Orioles

Alex Rodriguez will start the New York Yankees' biggest game of the year on the bench. After being pinch hit for in Games 3 and 4 against the Baltimore Orioles, the $275 million third baseman was removed from the starting lineup for Game 5 on Friday. Ibanez hits for A-Rod, homers twice in Yankees win

Down by a run in an all-even AL division series, Joe Girardi approached Alex Rodriguez and told baseball's highest-paid player he was going to pinch hit for him. A-Rod's October brings Snub Seen 'Round the World

His production shriveled, his aura dissipated, his place in history unsettled and his ego almost certainly bruised, Alex Rodriguez took a seat following the Snub Seen `Round the World and became a spectator, little different than the 50,000 other fans at Yankee Stadium. At age 37, he has become perhaps the biggest hole in the New York Yankees' batting order this October, a close...
